The summary

  • Main ingredient: a liquid organic nitrogen fertiliser, NPK 5-1-4, based on fish emulsion.
  • Growth dose: 2 ml per litre to start with, up to 4 ml on established plants, 1 to 2 ml as a foliar spray.
  • Crops: vegetables, herbs, flowers and potted plants, in soil or on coir.
  • Aquaponics: it feeds the pots and soil beds around the system, not the water the fish live in.

Fish emulsion and beetroot to feed vegetables grown in soil or on coconut fibre

BioBizz Fish-Mix is a liquid organic fertiliser made from fish emulsion, NPK 5-1-4, for vegetable growth in soil or on coco fibre. It is dosed at 2 to 4 ml per litre of watering, before Bio-Grow takes over at flowering. Made for living soil, it is strictly forbidden in the water of an aquaponic tank.

Fish-Mix is a liquid organic nitrogen fertiliser from BioBizz. Its base is an emulsion of fish caught in the North Sea, blended with an extract of sugar beet grown in the Netherlands. The emulsion is neither acid-extracted nor stabilised with BHT, a synthetic preservative common in fish fertilisers. Its analysis shows 5% total nitrogen, of which 3.6% is in organic form, 1% phosphorus and 4% potassium, so what you mainly supply is what is needed to grow leaves and stems.

🐟 Nitrogen released by the soil

Most of this nitrogen is organic: plants cannot absorb it as it is. It is the bacteria and fungi in the soil that gradually convert it into assimilable forms, and the sugars from the beet serve as their energy source. This is why Fish-Mix is used in a living grow medium, whether compost, garden soil or coco fibre, where this microflora is at work. The article on worm composting shows how to maintain this soil life. A small share of the nitrogen, 1.4% in total, is already in ammoniacal or nitric form and is available as soon as you water. If you grow in coco fibre, adjust the pH of the water and add a botanical activator such as Acti-Vera from the same range, which helps microbial life establish itself in this poor grow medium.

In the vegetable garden

Lettuce, cabbages, spinach and leeks benefit from a regular supply of nitrogen while they grow.

Potted

Herbs and potted tomatoes, whose compost is quickly exhausted, receive the fertiliser at every watering.

On seedlings

Gentle enough for young plants, it is given as soon as the first true leaves appear.

On the foliage

Diluted at 1 or 2 ml per litre, it is sprayed on the leaves, one to three times a week.

💧 Dose and frequency

The range's growing programme puts Fish-Mix at 2 ml per litre of irrigation water from the cutting stage and throughout growth, then between 2 and 4 ml as the plant fills out. In an already rich compost, such as All-Mix enriched with worm castings, stay at around 2 ml per litre, whereas a light, lightly fertilised compost such as Light-Mix will take up to 4 ml on well-developed plants. Fish-Mix and Bio-Grow do the same job: choose one or the other, never both in the same watering can. For tomatoes, peppers and courgettes, the programme switches to Bio-Grow, which is richer in potassium, when you want to trigger flowering, while lettuces and herbs stay on Fish-Mix until harvest.

A pH test for coco coir

Coco fibre barely buffers pH, unlike potting compost. A drop-based pH test lets you check the irrigation water once the fertiliser has been diluted, before you pour it on. You then know whether it needs correcting, and by how much, rather than waiting for discoloured leaves: water that is too acidic can be raised by small additions of Bio-Up, without a strong acid.

No fish emulsion in narrow pipes

Irrigation systems with narrow pipes, such as pots watered by gravity through a valve or drippers on micro-tubing, become clogged with organic fertilisers. Keep Fish-Mix for the watering can and the sprayer, and use a fully soluble mineral fertiliser for these networks.

Choose the size according to the volume of water you feed. At 3 ml per litre, the 250 ml bottle makes up 83 litres of solution, enough to look after a few pots on a balcony for a season. The one-litre bottle makes more than 300 litres for a small vegetable garden, and the 5-litre container is intended for allotments or greenhouses that water several dozen plants every week. For foliar spraying, the dilution drops to 1 or 2 ml per litre, and to just 1 ml when you mix Fish-Mix with two other spray products from the range: one bottle then lasts much longer.

🌱 The role of Fish-Mix in aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, nitrogen is the one resource that is almost never in short supply. The fish excrete it as ammonia, the bacteria in the filter convert it into nitrates, and the reference values for aquaponic water give almost as much as for a hydroponic lettuce solution. The elements that are lacking are of a different kind: iron, potassium and calcium are the most common deficiencies, and those same reference values place iron 20 times below what a lettuce receives in hydroponics. Pouring a nitrogen fertiliser into the fish water therefore corrects nothing of what is missing, and its organic matter finds no living soil there to break it down. The guide which fertiliser to use in aquaponics presents supplements designed for water shared with fish.

You correct these deficiencies with inputs that are safe for fish: a DTPA chelated iron kept at around 2 mg per litre, and potassium- or calcium-based buffers, which raise the pH that nitrification keeps lowering. Fish-Mix keeps its place around your system, in the planters and potting-compost pots on the balcony, the soil beds where grow the vegetables that do not fit in the grow beds, and the neighbouring vegetable garden. In a decoupled system, where the plant loop is separate from the fish loop, the nutrition of the plant side is supplemented with soluble mineral salts, which suit circulating water better than an organic emulsion.
