The summary

Kitchen microgreens in 7 to 14 days, using one, two or three jars

This sprouter produces edible shoots on a worktop in 7 to 14 days. You sow, add a little water each day, and harvest straight to the plate. The crop doesn't travel and doesn't need packaging, which makes a particularly noticeable difference to the flavour of the more delicate varieties. A punnet of microgreens bought in a shop has typically been cut 3 to 5 days earlier, and that is precisely the window during which these shoots lose their texture and their aroma.

🌿 What a harvest yields

Microgreens are cut young, at the first appearance of true leaves, between the seventh and fourteenth day depending on the species. Radish, sunflower, pea, basil, red cabbage, and beetroot each give a different flavour and colour, and are scattered raw over a salad, soup, omelette, or slice of toast at the last moment. Indirect natural light is sufficient for most varieties, saving you from having to install a grow light. Progress is monitored by eye through the jar wall, and the daily task amounts to a little water poured into the reservoir, no rinsing, no monitoring.

A jar

It yields a harvest every 7 to 14 days, then a dormant period before the next.

Two jars

Two sowings staggered by a few days, with the second harvest taking over from the first.

Three jars

Three varieties can be grown alongside one another, and harvesting comes round almost every week.

🧼 Cleaning between two cycles

The propagator is made from BPA-free food-grade plastic, and its smooth surfaces can be cleaned in seconds with soapy water or diluted white vinegar. This cleaning should be done between every cycle without exception, as it is what keeps mould at bay during the next seedling batch. Nothing else wears out, and no consumables are needed beyond the seeds themselves, which sets this type of propagator clearly apart from cartridge or disposable-mat systems. Dry all parts before reassembling rather than stacking them wet, because residual water trapped between two smooth surfaces is precisely the environment mould needs to lie in wait for the next sowing.

Four seed families for jars

The organic sprouting seeds range includes brassicas, legumes, cereals, and herbs, and a single packet covers several successive seedlings. With two or three jars, you can run several families of sprouts at once and change flavour from one cycle to the next. Add two varieties to your first order rather than one, since the whole point of a multi-jar sprouter lies in that rotation.

Sow thinly, submerge the seeds

A sparse sowing produces a sparse mat, so spread the seeds densely and evenly across the entire surface, leaving no bare patches. The first 48 hours are then spent covered, in darkness, before exposure to indirect natural light. Water should be poured into the lower reservoir and never onto the seeds: it is the perforated level that keeps them in contact with air, and a waterlogged seedling will go mouldy before it germinates.

📦 Complete kit or jar only

Two configurations exist in the options, and they do not meet the same need. The complete kit includes the frame, the jar or jars, and everything needed to get started, this is the one to go for on a first purchase. The jar only option is for those who already own the frame and want to add a growing station or replace a broken jar. Make sure you check the selected option before confirming, as the difference is not obvious from the thumbnail and the disappointment only becomes clear when you open the parcel. The number of jars is best chosen based on your actual consumption rather than the impulse of the moment, since an extra station costs nothing to run but does require an additional sowing and rinse at each cycle.

🌡️ Where to position it

Location matters more than people think, and it comes down to three conditions. An ordinary kitchen temperature, between 18 and 24 °C, suits all common varieties, whereas a room at 15 °C noticeably extends timings. Indirect natural light, a worktop close to a window, produces green, compact shoots, whereas full sun through glass heats the jar and dries it out. Finally, an accessible spot determines everything else: a sprouter tucked away in a cupboard ends up forgotten halfway through, as most buyers discover on their first cycle, and a microgreens tray cannot be left unattended for 3 days in a row.

🥗 The varieties and their timings

Not all seeds follow the same schedule, and mixing species with different growth cycles in the same jar leads to an uneven harvest. Radish and cress germinate quickly and are ready to cut around day seven, with a notably sharp, peppery flavour. Sunflower and pea need 2 or 3 extra days but produce thick, fleshy shoots, the most nutritious of the bunch. Basil, beetroot, and red cabbage are the slowest, taking up to 14 days, and these are the ones that bring the colour. Grow one species per jar, then combine them on the plate, where the mix really comes into its own. A jar sown with a ready-made blend almost always ends up dominated by the most vigorous species, which crowds out the others before they can reach the light. The four families available in the organic sprouting seed kits are spread across this speed spectrum, with legumes and cereals at the faster end and herbs at the slower end.

🔁 Planning your seedlings

A multi-jar sprouter is pointless if everything is started at the same time, and that's the most common organisational mistake people make. Stagger your seedlings by 3 or 4 days from one jar to the next, and you'll get an almost continuous harvest instead of a glut followed by a gap. The rhythm then sorts itself out naturally, with each harvest freeing up a jar that goes straight back into use after washing. Write the sowing date on a label stuck to the base of each jar, since two varieties at the same stage look very similar, and a week's difference within a 10-day cycle changes the result completely.
