Hobby metal air valve with 1 or 2 outlets, metal T-fitting
These Hobby metal parts fit onto 4/6 mm air pipe. The valve adjusts the flow on one outlet or shares it between two, each with its own dial. The metal T-piece splits the pipe into two branches.
The summary
- Which part: one outlet to adjust, two to split and adjust, the T-piece to split.
- What material: metal, ribbed ends.
- For which pipe: standard 4/6 mm airline.
- For CO2: yes, the valve also adjusts CO2.
Metal parts for adjusting and splitting air or CO2
These three Hobby metal parts fit onto 4/6 mm air pipe, with ribbed ends that grip the pipe and dials that hold their setting. The single-outlet model adjusts the flow to one diffuser, or to a CO2 line. The two-outlet model splits the air into 2 branches and adjusts each one separately. The metal T-piece, for its part, splits the pipe without any adjustment, when both branches can receive the same amount of air.
🫧 Adjust, split, or both
A diffuser that is too strong
The single-outlet valve slows its flow rate.
Two diffusers
The two-outlet tap adjusts each branch.
Simple split
The metal T splits the air without a dial.
CO2 circuit
The single-outlet tap fine-tunes the gas flow.
On your setup, the two-way valve replaces a T-piece and two valves on its own: air enters on one side and leaves through 2 outlets, each with its own dial. Place it above the water level, open both dials, then gradually close the one that gives the most bubbles. The metal T-piece is fitted in the same way, but both of its branches always stay open: keep it for two identical diffusers placed at the same depth, otherwise the air rushes towards the one that offers the least resistance.
Protect the pump before the tap
A non-return valve fitted between the pump and the tap stops water flowing back into the pump during a power cut. It is fitted once, upstream, and protects every branch that the tap then feeds. On a CO2 circuit, it is fitted between the tap and the diffuser and protects the regulator from water in the same way.
A special pipe for the CO2 circuit
On a CO2 system, replace ordinary air pipe with pipe designed for this gas. Air pipe lets some of the CO2 diffuse through its wall and hardens over time, so the bubble counter setting no longer holds.
🔩 Installing and adjusting
Fix the tap to the side of the cabinet or tank, using adhesive or a suction cup, so that the weight of the pipes does not make it hang down. You can then turn the dials with one hand, without pulling on the pipes. Run the pipes without kinks to the diffusers and keep them as short as possible, as every metre and every elbow reduces the flow a little.
Suppose your two-outlet air pump already feeds two diffusers and you also want to aerate a small quarantine tank. The two-way valve connects to one of the pump's outlets, just after the non-return valve. Open both dials fully, then gradually close the one for the small tank until its bubbles are gentle. The rest of the flow goes to the other branch, without you having to touch the pump.
On the CO2 supply of a planted aquarium, the single-outlet valve acts as a fine-tuning control between the regulator and the diffuser. CO2 is set in bubbles per minute, usually with the help of a bubble counter: you set the regulator first, then fine-tune with the dial until you reach the rate you want, and the metal dial then holds that setting without drifting. Your non-return valve then goes between the valve and the diffuser, so that water cannot flow back as far as the regulator.
🌱 In aquaponics
In your system, the two-outlet valve suits small volumes well: one branch for the fish tank, the other for a deep water culture bed, each set according to its needs. The fish branch stays fully open all year round. The grow bed branch is opened further in summer, when warm water holds less oxygen, as the guide to looking after your aquaponic system in summer explains, and is turned down a notch in winter.
