  • The three crops: Genovese basil, Gloire du Dauphiné batavia lettuce and dwarf pak choy, all in certified organic heritage seed varieties.
  • How to get started: soak the sponges for 3 to 5 minutes, sow 1 to 2 seeds, then place the sponges in the tower after 5 to 10 days.
  • When to harvest: pak choy 45 to 60 days after the seedling stage, basil and lettuce continuously, leaf by leaf.
  • Where to place it: in a heated room near a window, with the LED light bar supplementing natural daylight.
  • How it arrives: in 2 or 3 parcels a few days apart, the tower disassembled with its fixings.

The tower, its baskets, its sponges and three seed packets

This pack contains everything you need for the first seedling in the 30-pot indoor hydroponic tower: the tower with its LED grow light and pump, 50 growing baskets, 50 peat germination sponges, and 3 seed packets chosen to thrive indoors. There's no need to work out which baskets fit which sponges, or which varieties can cope with the light levels of a living room, that's all been done for you. All that's left is to assemble the tower, sow, and plug in.

🌱 From cardboard to first seedling

Starting up follows a simple sequence that avoids losing a week. First, soak the sponges for 3 to 5 minutes in lukewarm water, then place 1 to 2 seeds in the central hole of each one. The sponges then spend 5 to 10 days in a warm, lit environment until the first roots protrude from the peat. Only at that point are they transferred to a basket and a position in the tower, where the gravity cascade takes over the supply of water and nutrients.

Basilic Vert de Gênes

This broad-leaved Italian variety is the classic pesto basil. It germinates in 1 to 2 weeks and can be harvested continuously from the top, by pinching back each week.

Laitue Gloire du Dauphiné

This batavia forms an open rosette with wavy, firm leaves. You harvest leaf by leaf, which extends the cropping period by 2 to 3 weeks.

Dwarf pak choy

This compact Chinese cabbage germinates in 5 to 10 days and is ready to cut 45 to 60 days after sowing. Cut 3 cm above the crown, it produces a second rosette.

Heritage seeds

The three seed packets come from the Kokopelli association. They are organic, non-hybrid seeds, meaning your own saved seeds will produce the same variety again.

💡 Light and positioning

The tower's LED bar provides supplementary light alongside natural daylight, it does not replace it. Place the unit near a window, even one facing north, and leave the bar on for 16 hours a day. The three varieties have different light requirements, which determines their position on the tower: basil, a full-sun plant, goes at the top where the light intensity is greatest, while lettuce and pak choy, which are happy with more moderate light, occupy the lower levels. A daily timer handles the switching on and off without you having to think about it.

Use TriPart fertilisers with the tower

Choose the version with fertiliser if you do not yet have a nutrient solution, because the seed's reserves are exhausted a few days after germination and the bare root then has nothing to draw on but whatever is in the reservoir water. It includes the Starter Kit TriPart: the three 500 ml bottles, Grow, Micro, and Bloom, plus a sachet of pH-, enough to take lettuce, pak choi, and basil from seedling to harvest. Choose the soft water or hard water version depending on the calcium level of your tap water, which determines the formulation of the Micro bottle.

Soaking the sponges without waterlogging them

A peat sponge should be soaked for 3 to 5 minutes, never more than 30: beyond that, the plug becomes waterlogged and the seed lacks the air it needs to germinate. Place basil and lettuce seeds on the surface without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the sponges above 15 °C during germination, as a cold room can delay emergence by several days.

🗓️ The three-crop growing calendar

The three varieties don't germinate at the same rate, which is actually an advantage for spreading out harvests. Pak choi is first to emerge, in 5 to 10 days, then lettuce in 7 to 14 days, and basil in 1 to 2 weeks. Room temperature matters more than the season: lettuce germinates between 15 and 21 °C but the seed can go dormant above 25 °C, whereas basil requires 18 to 22 °C. In midsummer, sow your lettuce in the coolest room available. The guide to hydroponic growing season by season extends this schedule beyond the three varieties in the pack.

💧 The 10-litre reservoir

The tower runs on a 10-litre reservoir, which makes each dose straightforward to calculate: work per litre and multiply by 10. At first roots, all three TriPart fertilisers are added at 0.5 ml per litre each, that is 5 ml of Grow, 5 ml of Micro, and 5 ml of Bloom. When the first true leaves appear, the dose moves to 1 ml per litre, so 10 ml of each. At full leaf growth, Grow reaches 1.8 ml per litre, Micro 1.2, and Bloom 0.6, giving 18, 12, and 6 ml for a full reservoir.

At this rate, the 500 ml Grow bottle in the fertiliser kit covers more than 25 full-strength fills during active growth, and the other two even more. Add each bottle separately to the water while stirring, then adjust the pH last using the pH- sachet, adding it in small pinches and measuring between additions. For lettuces and pak choy, aim for a pH of 5.6 to 6.0, the range in which nutrients remain available to bare roots.

Once fully grown, 30 lettuces take up 2.4 to 3.4 litres of water per day, meaning you'll need to top up with plain water every 3 to 4 days at full capacity, compared with several weeks of autonomy just after transplanting. Between top-ups, the conductivity of the solution, which reflects the concentration of dissolved salts, rises as the level drops: it's the water that's leaving, not the fertiliser. Replace the entire solution every 2 to 3 weeks, and rinse the reservoir at the same time.

🐠 The tower on pond water

All three varieties in the pack tolerate aquaponic water with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, which suits both fish and bacteria. The tower itself requires solids filtration upstream, as its level distributors block quickly with suspended matter. Basil slows down as soon as the water drops below 15 °C, which limits the use of an outdoor pond in winter. With pond water, nitrogen is already present as nitrate, so the solution is topped up rather than built from scratch. The difference between the two methods is covered in our article on aquaponics and hydroponics.

🔁 After the first harvest

The pack contains 50 baskets and 50 sponges for 30 slots, leaving 20 spare sets. These are useful for doubling up on seedlings where germination is uncertain, and for preparing the next cycle while the first finishes growing. The packets contain approximately 200 basil seeds, 500 lettuce seeds and 250 pak choy seeds, more than enough to sow across several seasons. Between cycles, empty the reservoir, separate the six tiers and rinse them under clean water before adding a fresh solution. Cut 3 cm above the collar, pak choy will regrow even without resowing.

📦 What the pack contains

The pack contains the 30-slot tower, supplied flat-packed with its support frame, 4 LED bars, 12 V submersible pump, mains adaptor, and water level indicator. Also included are 50 mesh growing baskets, 50 peat germination sponges, and 3 seed sachets of basil, lettuce, and pak choy. The fertiliser bundles add 3 x 500 ml TriPart bottles and a sachet of pH-. Items do not all ship from the same warehouse: they may arrive in 2 or 3 separate parcels, a few days apart, so a first parcel that seems incomplete does not mean anything is missing from your order.
