These floating pellets of 5 to 5.5 mm are a daily maintenance food for pond fish, koi carp, common carp and goldfish, from around fifteen centimetres in length. The 10 kg bag is not a trial size. It is intended for a pond with a large number of fish, or a large volume of water, where feeding takes place every day throughout the warmer months. Two questions then determine your purchase: how long this bag will last in your setup, and what condition it will be in by the end.

📅 10 kg, how long will it last

At a feeding rate of 2% of body weight per day, the warm-season benchmark, a 10 kg bag lasts around 50 days for 10 kg of fish, 25 days for 20 kg, and 10 days for 50 kg. In cooler water, around 15 to 18 °C, the ration drops to around 1% and these durations double. Weigh your first feed of the season, because the hand always overestimates on a large pond, and a 20% error repeats itself every single day. The population weight should be reassessed at the start of each season rather than set once and forgotten, since koi that grow year on year shift the ration upwards with no obvious warning sign.

28% protein

This is a maintenance rate. It sustains seasonal activity without pushing growth, and it puts less load on the filter for the same ration.

3% fat content

With a low fat content, oxidation is slower once the bag is opened. That is what makes a 10 kg format practical.

0.5% phosphorus

Unassimilated phosphorus returns to the pond water and feeds algae. This level remains low for a pond feed.

🥣 Managing feeding time

Feed the full amount so that it is entirely consumed within a few minutes, taking into account the water temperature and the activity of your fish. Several small feeds are better than one large one, and you can judge when to stop by eye, since the pellets float. This visual check is what sets a floating food apart from a sinking one on a large pond, where you never see the bottom and uneaten food accumulates unnoticed until the water turns cloudy. Feed as long as the water stays above 12 °C; below that, cold-water food, rated for 5 to 15 °C, takes over, and below 8 °C you stop feeding altogether.

What comes with a 10 kg bag

Pick up a floating thermometer with the bag, as it is what tells you when to cut back feeding and when to switch to a cold-water food. A precision scale or a measuring jug prevents you from feeding by eye over a large volume. Four things not to do

Do not leave any remaining food over winter in a heated storage area, that is the situation that degrades a food product most quickly. Do not measure temperature in the air; the difference from the water can be several degrees in spring. Do not reuse a bag whose smell has turned in order to use up the stock. And never feed this food to ruminants or any other animal species, as the label states.

📦 Keeping 10 kg without damaging it

What ages in a pellet is the lipid content. Exposed to oxygen, fats oxidise, light and heat accelerate the reaction, and the degradation products then attack the vitamins in the feed. The 3% fat content of this formula works in your favour here: a 10 kg bag at 3% keeps significantly better than one at 13%, such as the sinking sturgeon feed. That said, it is no excuse for carelessness. Reseal the bag tightly, pressing out the air after each use, store it somewhere dry and shaded, never in a room that heats up in summer, and smell it when you open it, a rancid odour indicates oxidised lipids.

🌿 The load returned to the filter

What you feed goes back into the water. At the same ration, 28% protein produces around 20% less ammonia nitrogen than a feed at 33.5%. That's a rough upper estimate, because a planted pond absorbs some of it, and it's best verified with a test rather than a calculation. One shortcut to avoid: a lower-protein feed doesn't mean you can give more of it, the quantity distributed drives the load far more than the formula does. 🐟 Which pond warrants this size

The threshold is something you calculate rather than estimate. A 10 kg bag retains its quality for around three months after opening under good storage conditions, which means you need to use approximately 110 g per day to finish it in time. At 2% of body weight, this corresponds to a population of around 5 kg of fish, roughly ten medium-sized koi or a well-stocked goldfish pond. Below that, a smaller pack works out cheaper in use despite a higher price per kilogram, simply because you will not be throwing any away.

🚚 On receipt of your parcel

A 10 kg parcel will not fit through a letterbox, so it is worth arranging to be in for delivery or selecting a collection point when placing your order. On receipt, check that the bag has not been punctured in transit, as an open bag in the hold will absorb moisture and cause the contents to clump. How long does a 10 kg bag last?

It all depends on the total weight of your fish. At a feeding rate of 2% of that weight per day — the warm-season benchmark — one bag will last:

What is the pellet size, and which fish is it suitable for?

Is this bag suitable for an aquaponic system that produces vegetables?

Yes, and the protein level works in your favour. In aquaponics, the ration controls both the growth of your fish and the nitrogen your plants feed on. A maintenance feed at 28% establishes a steady load, which is easier to monitor than a growth formula.

The same principle applies as with an ornamental pond: only distribute what will be consumed, remove any uneaten food with a net, and monitor your water with an ammonium test followed by a nitrite test after every change of ration.

How many feeds per day, and how long should they be allowed to eat?

The feeding instruction comes down to one sentence: feed only what is completely consumed within a few minutes, taking into account water temperature, pond conditions, and fish activity.

In practice, several small feeds are better than one large one, and the end of a feed is judged by eye since the pellet floats. On a large pond, weigh the first feed of the season — the hand always overestimates.

I have half a bag left in autumn — what should I do with it?

As long as the water stays above 12 °C, carry on as normal, gradually reducing the ration as it cools.
Between 8 and 12 °C, switch to a food designed for cold water, such as the cold-water food rated from 5 to 15 °C.
Seal the bag tightly, press out the air, and store it somewhere dry and shaded — not in a shelter that heats up in the sun.
In spring, use up this remainder first before opening a new bag, and smell it before the first feeding.

How can you tell when a bag of pellets is no longer good?

A bag that is no longer good can be identified by these signs:

A rancid smell, sharp or paint-like, very different from the fishmeal smell of a fresh bag.
Pellets that stick together or have clumped into blocks, a sign that moisture has got in.
A white or greenish film on the surface of the pellets.
Fish that approach and swim away without taking the food, even though the temperature and season have not changed.

Will this bag put less strain on my filter?

At an equal ration, yes: 28% protein produces around 20% less ammonia nitrogen than a feed at 33.5%, and around 40% less than one at 47%. At a larger ration, no: it's the quantity fed that matters.

This calculation is a conservative order of magnitude, assuming half the nitrogen is released into the water. In a planted pond, some is taken up by the plants. The only way to know what's happening in your system is to measure, with an ammonium test and then a nitrite test.
