Worm composter, olla, and terracotta slug trap, for a planter

This discovery set brings together three terracotta objects, each serving a distinct purpose in the garden: a 2-litre worm composter to feed the soil, a 0.5-litre olla to water it, and a slug trap to protect young plants. You can equip a planter or a corner of the vegetable patch in one go, and all three objects work without any power supply.

The three items form a small loop. The trap diverts slugs away from young plants, its contents go into the composter, the composter feeds the soil in the planter, and the olla keeps that soil moist between waterings. All you need to provide is peelings, water and a little beer. The composter also greatly reduces the volume of what it receives: it takes roughly 20 kg of peelings to produce 1 kg of compost, which means the contents are constantly compacting and you can keep adding material without ever having to empty it.

In the planter

The composter is buried up to its lid, between the plants it feeds.

Among the plants

The olla is buried next to the roots it is meant to moisten.

Along the edge

The trap is placed outside the growing area, at the base of a shrub or in a hedge.

🪴 The planter composter

The 2-litre Compostino wormery is buried in the window box with the lid flush with the surface. You add your peelings cut into small pieces, with a handful of sawdust after each addition, and the compost forms in direct contact with the soil where your plants are growing. It measures 16 cm in diameter and 22 cm in height, which requires a window box with at least 22 cm of soil, and it processes around 3 kg of food waste per year. It comes with its lid and a 400 g bag of coarse sawdust.

Worms to start the 2-litre Compostino

A composting worm kit is the recommended complement to the Compostino, especially in a raised planter where garden worms cannot reach. The colony starts breaking down your peelings from the very first additions, whereas purely bacterial decomposition takes around 12 months. With worms, expect around 6 months at the start, then 3 months once the colony is established.

The olla lid stays in place

An uncovered olla loses its water through evaporation and becomes a breeding site for mosquitoes. Replace the lid after every refill, including when used in an indoor pot.

The wall of the Compostino is perforated: compost worms can retreat into the soil of the planter when it gets too hot in summer or too cold in winter, then return to the fresh matter. You may occasionally find some when repotting, which is no cause for concern. To avoid any nuisance, only add raw or cooked peelings without sauce, coffee and tea grounds, and crushed eggshells to the composter; meat, fish, citrus fruit, garlic, and onion should be kept out.

💧 The olla, a buried water reservoir

An olla is a microporous clay pot that you bury among your plants and fill with water. The water seeps through the wall by capillary action, keeping the surrounding soil moist so that roots can draw on it continuously. You water less frequently, and your plants hold up far better between waterings. It holds 0.5 litres, measures 12 cm in diameter and 18 cm tall, and fits neatly into an indoor flowerpot or an outdoor planter. The article on olla watering explains in detail how it works.

🐌 The slug trap

The trap holds approximately 0.75 litres of beer, whose scent attracts slugs and snails from a radius of around 4 metres; once inside, they drown. Glazed and sealed by its lid, it prevents rain from diluting the beer, which therefore remains effective for 5 days without needing to be refreshed, and it is designed so that hedgehogs can reach neither the beer nor the drowned gastropods. Place it outside the growing area to draw slugs away from your young plants: one trap covers approximately 10 m², and two traps placed either side of a vegetable bed cover around twenty. Once full, empty the contents onto the compost heap, then refill. The enamel glaze is not frost-resistant: store the trap in a dry, frost-free place over winter.

❄️ The Compostino in winter

The Compostino overwinters in the ground: it has withstood several days of hard frost without damage, down to -7 °C for 3 days, thanks to its sturdy lid and its unglazed clay, and a layer of mulch is enough to protect it in regions with harsh winters. You do not need to dig it up to harvest, since its compost is already benefiting the surrounding roots; if you want to retrieve the compost, an opening in the lower section allows you to extract it once a year, in spring, before replanting.

📦 The contents of the kit

The gift set contains the 2-litre Compostino worm composter with its lid and bag of wood shavings, the 0.5-litre olla with its lid, and the glazed slug trap with its lid, along with their instructions for use. The olla and the trap are hand-crafted in Alsace, from clay sourced at a local quarry and free of chemical additives, and the set is designed in Haguenau. If you would like several traps around the same bed, the slug trap is also available individually, and the annual accessories pack supplies the wood shavings for subsequent years.
