The nitrogen cycle in aquaponics
This article explains the work of the bacteria that colonise the filter media.
This cascade filter hangs on the rim of the aquarium and returns the filtered water as a sheet. Four sizes cover tanks from 10 to 300 litres, with automatic priming and cartridges that change in a single movement.
A waterfall filter hangs on the back rim of the aquarium, on the outside of the glass. Its pump, placed in the water, lifts the tank water into a reservoir filled with filter media, and the clean water falls back into the aquarium through a wide spout, in a sheet that ripples the surface. The FZN PRO applies this principle in four sizes, from 320 to 1,370 L/h, for tanks of 10 to 300 litres. You can install it in a few minutes, with no pipe or cabinet, and keep the inside of the tank free.
Automatic priming
The filter fills itself at start-up and restarts on its own after a power cut.
Flow control knob
A large rotary knob adjusts the flow, from a gentle trickle to full power.
Motor in the water
The pump runs submerged, which muffles its noise: 31 to 32 dB depending on the model.
Adjustable tilt
A vertical adjustment sets the housing exactly level on the edge of the glass.
Choose the size according to the volume of your tank. The FZN PRO 400, the most compact, is designed for small tanks of 10 to 75 litres. The 700 suits aquariums of 75 to 130 litres, the 1000 from 130 to 200 litres and the 1500 from 200 to 300 litres. These three larger models add the cartridge basket, the telescopic intake tube and the option of a skimmer.
The canister takes filter cartridges that lift out in one movement together with their basket, ready to be rinsed over a bucket. Their number follows the size of the filter: one on the 400, two on the 700, four on the 1000 and six on the 1500. Three fillings are available: STANDARD in filter wool for mechanical filtration, CARBOMAX with activated carbon against odours and yellowed water, PHOSMAX against phosphates, which encourage algae. You can also empty the canister and layer your own loose media in it, sponge at the bottom, ceramic in the middle, filter wool on top, or combine the two.
A layer of media balls for the bacteria
In the reservoir of an FZN PRO 1000 or 1500, a layer of EHEIM SUBSTRATpro biological filtration beads beneath the filter wool multiplies the surface area where bacteria live. The filter then copes better with the waste of a well-stocked tank, and the wool remains the only part that needs changing often.
On an aquarium topped with a small grow bed, the FZN PRO acts as the biological filter. The bacteria living in its media convert the fish's ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate, the form of nitrogen that your herbs and lettuces absorb, as explained in the article on the nitrogen cycle. The cascading water also stirs the surface and promotes gas exchange, which benefits fish and bacteria alike. Reserve the CARBOMAX cartridge for removing a medication once treatment is over: the rest of the time, a simple filter wool and biological media are enough in a planted tank.
You receive the complete FZN PRO filter, ready to plug in, with its pump, cable and suction tube with strainer. The canister arrives filled with its filter cartridges, from one to six depending on the model, and the 700, 1000 and 1500 models add the basket that holds them and the telescopic suction tube. To start up a new tank, a dose of EasyStart starter bacteria speeds up the colonisation of the filter media.
