The standard scientific work on aquaponics in French, published by Quae in 2019 under the coordination of two ITAVI engineers. It takes stock of the knowledge produced by the APIVA research programme and speaks to anyone who designs, sizes or assesses a production system.

Présentation

This is the only French-language book to come out of public research, and you can tell from the introduction onwards. It starts with aquaculture, its worldwide growth and the criticism it draws, in order to place aquaponics among the possible answers, alongside recirculating systems and integrated multitrophic aquaculture. Aquaponics is therefore presented not as a gardener's hobby but as a production method to be assessed.

The four chapters move from the concept towards implementation. The first sets out the approaches and the scales, then contrasts coupled and decoupled systems, a distinction most mainstream guides pass over in silence. The second deals separately with the three compartments, fish, plant and bacteria, each with its own husbandry and its own constraints. The third gets into sizing and into the physical and chemical parameters of the water, taking it as read that running a system is a series of trade-offs. The last chapter, rarer still, covers the French and European regulatory framework, the health rules and economic viability.

Au sommaire

  1. 1Introduction - the growth of aquaculture and the new production paradigms
  2. 2Chapter 1 - The concept of aquaponics, its approaches and its uses
  3. 3Chapter 2 - Fish, plants and bacteria, three technical fields to bring together
  4. 4Chapter 3 - Designing and running an aquaponic system
  5. 5Chapter 4 - Regulatory, social and economic issues
  6. 6Conclusion, glossary, bibliography

Ce qu'on en retient

  • The choice between a coupled and a decoupled system governs most of the design, and it comes before everything else.
  • Fish, plants and bacteria each have their own optimum, and an aquaponic system cannot satisfy all three at once: you have to arbitrate.
  • Sizing is worked out from the daily feed ration given to the fish, not from the volume of the tank.
  • Aquaponics falls under two separate sets of rules, those for fish farming and those for plant production, which complicates any commercial project.
  • Water recirculation and effluent recycling are the two solid environmental arguments for the technique, and the book documents them with figures.

Le verdict de la rédaction

Note du produit : 4.6 4.6/5

This is the book to read once you are past your first tank and want to understand why a system behaves the way it does. The writing is collective, scientific and at times dry, and this is not a build manual: you will find neither a shopping list nor a plan to follow. On sizing, water chemistry and above all the French regulatory framework, however, no other book in French goes as far. If you are starting out, begin with L'aquaponie pour les Nuls and keep this one for later.

Les plus

  • +Comes out of the APIVA research programme, coordinated by ITAVI
  • +The only book in French that covers the regulatory and health framework
  • +Clearly separates coupled systems from decoupled systems
  • +Full bibliography and glossary, usable for going further

Les moins

  • No build plans: this is not a DIY manual
  • Collective, scientific writing, demanding for a beginner
  • Published in 2019, it does not cover later regulatory changes
  • Steep cover price for a 210-page book

À propos de l'auteur

Pierre Foucard is an engineer and research and development project manager at ITAVI, the French technical institute for the poultry, rabbit and fish farming sectors. He ran the first French trials combining aquaculture and horticulture, and published their results.

Aurélien Tocqueville heads the aquaculture department at ITAVI. He speaks regularly on regulatory questions as they apply to aquaponics, a subject on which he is an authority in France.

The two of them coordinated the APIVA project, Aquaponie Innovation Végétale et Aquaculture, whose work this book sets out. The book is a collective one: it brings together contributions from several French research teams.

Le saviez-vous ?

The book sets out the work of the APIVA project, run in France from 2014 to assess aquaponics scientifically. As far as we know it is the only French-language book in the field written by an agricultural technical institute rather than by a practitioner.
