Blue Exit eliminates cyanobacteria, the "blue-green algae" that form a slimy blue-green mat on the substrate, decorations and plants in the aquarium. It works without antibiotics or copper, and is safe for fish, shrimp, snails and plants.
One course of treatment lasts 5 days, in bottles from 250 ml to 1 litre.
The summary
- Which bottle: 250 ml for a course of treatment up to 400 L, 1 L for a very large tank or several courses.
- How it works: against cyanobacteria, with no antibiotic or copper.
- The course: 10 ml per 80 L per day for 5 days.
- The precaution: remove the activated carbon, and make no water changes for 14 days.
Getting rid of the blue-green carpet of cyanobacteria, without antibiotics or copper
Easy-Life Blue Exit is a treatment that eliminates cyanobacteria, those "blue-green algae" that form a slimy blue-green mat, without antibiotics or copper, and so without risk to shrimp and snails. The course lasts 5 days, at 10 ml per 80 L per day. The 250 ml bottle is enough for an aquarium of up to 400 L.
Cyanobacteria are not true algae, even though they are called "blue-green algae": they are bacteria capable of photosynthesis. They form a slimy blue-green film, sometimes brown-red, on the substrate, stones and leaves in your aquarium, and often give off a smell of mud. They take hold when the water circulates poorly, when the lighting runs for too long, or when the nitrate level is very low while phosphates are still present. If you simply vacuum up the mat, it re-forms within a few days and carries on smothering the plants it covers.
🧪 What Blue Exit does
Blue Exit, by Easy-Life, tackles cyanobacteria directly, with no antibiotic or copper-based compound. Both of these families of treatment also act against them, but an antibiotic affects the beneficial bacteria in the filter, and copper is toxic to shrimps and snails. Blue Exit is stated to be safe for fish, shrimps, molluscs and plants, so you can treat the tank without emptying it. Cyanobacteria generally disappear within 10 days of the last dose.
The course lasts 5 consecutive days, at 10 ml per 80 litres of water each day. For a 160-litre aquarium, you therefore add 20 ml a day, or 100 ml for the whole course: the 250 ml bottle allows 2 complete courses. If the infestation is very heavy, the course can be extended by a few days, even at a double dose. Before the first dose, vacuum up most of the mat with a siphon, because the less cyanobacteria there is left to eliminate, the less oxygen its decomposition uses up, and keep the water well aerated throughout the treatment.
Remove the activated carbon before the first dose
Activated carbon and other adsorbent filter media capture the product before it can take effect. Remove them from the filter before the first dose, then do not put any back and do not change the water for 14 days from the start of the treatment. A water change made during this period dilutes the treatment.
📏 Which bottle to choose
A full course of treatment requires 62.5 ml per 100 litres of water. The 250 ml bottle therefore covers a course for a 400-litre aquarium, the 500 ml one a course for an 800-litre tank, and the 1-litre bottle a very large tank or several successive courses. For a 60-litre aquarium, a course requires about 37.5 ml: the 250 ml bottle then leaves you enough to treat several recurrences, provided you keep the bottle tightly closed between courses.
A nitrate test to find the cause
A planted tank where nitrates fall to zero while phosphates remain present favours cyanobacteria. The NO3 nitrate drop test shows you whether this is the case in your tank, before and after the treatment. You then know whether the fertilisation or the lighting needs adjusting so that the mat does not return.
🔍 Treat the cause at the same time
The product makes the algal mat disappear, but the conditions that caused it to appear still need to be corrected. Check the water circulation, especially in the corners and near the substrate, where the film settles first, and bring the lighting period back to around 8 hours a day. Also measure the phosphates with the PO4 phosphate drop test: a high level, introduced by overfeeding or by the top-up water, keeps the mat going. Blue Exit is for freshwater use only.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, cyanobacteria appear mainly in tanks exposed to the sun and in areas where the water stagnates. Blue Exit is designed for the aquarium: in a circuit connected to crops, first work on shading, circulation and the fish ration, as described in the guide to understanding and correcting cloudy water in aquaponics, and keep the treatment for an ornamental aquarium or a tank isolated from the circuit.
