Air pump for tanks and ponds, 80 to 3,600 L/h
These Hailea air pumps oxygenate the water in a hydroponic grow bed, an aquarium, or an aquaponic pond, delivering 1.3 to 60 litres of air per minute. The two smaller diaphragm models are suited to one or two grow beds; the two larger electromagnetic piston models can supply up to six diffusers via their manifold.
The summary
- What you receive: the pump of your choice; the ACO-208 and 318 come with a 6-outlet manifold and a reinforced pipe.
- The smaller models: 1.3 or 3.5 L/min for a tank, a self-watering pot, or a propagator.
- The larger models: 35 or 60 L/min for a pond or several tanks at once.
- The depth: from 1.2 m for the ACO-2201 to 2 m for the ACO-318, measured at the diffuser.
Four air compressors, from the hydroponic pot to the fish pond
The roots of a deep water culture and the fish in a pond continuously consume dissolved oxygen, and still water can only recharge from its surface. An air pump pushes air to the bottom of the tank via a pipe and a diffuser: the bubbles circulate the water, renew the exchange surface and maintain the oxygen level. You choose the model based on the water volume and the number of diffusers you wish to run.
🫧 Diaphragm or piston
The ACO-2201 and the ACO-5503 are diaphragm pumps: an electromagnet vibrates a rubber diaphragm that drives the air, drawing 1.8 and 4 W respectively and producing less than 40 dB of noise. The ACO-5503 has two dial-adjustable outlets, letting you supply two tanks or the hydroponic propagator. The ACO-208 and the ACO-318 are oil-free electromagnetic piston compressors housed in an aluminium body that dissipates heat: they deliver 35 and 60 L/min at 16 and 30 W.
Oxygenating a hydroponic pot with a reservoir
The ACO-2201 is the pump supplied with the hydroponic pot with reservoir, where it oxygenates 15 or 45 litres of solution through a single diffuser. It draws less than 2 W, which works out at around 1.3 kWh per month when running continuously. This is the right model for replacing the original pump or for fitting a DWC grow bed of the same size.
Position the pump above the water level
Position the pump above the water level, on a shelf or ledge, or fit a non-return valve on the pipe: when switched off, water can flow back through the pipe into the pump. Piston models generate heat during operation and must be kept in a dry, well-ventilated location, never inside an enclosed cabinet.
ACO-2201, 1,3 L/min
Single outlet, 1.8 W, for a pot or container up to approximately 50 litres.
ACO-5503, 3,5 L/min
Two adjustable outputs, 4 W, for a propagator or two trays.
ACO-208, 35 L/min
Piston pump, 16 W, 6-outlet manifold for multiple tanks.
ACO-318, 60 L/min
Piston pump, 30 W, for an aquaponic pond or a 1,000 L tank.
🐟 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, the air pump serves two purposes: it oxygenates the pond, where the fish and nitrifying bacteria consume large amounts of oxygen, and it aerates the deep water culture grow bed where the rafts float. With a larger model, you can supply both at the same time using a splitter, with one diffuser per zone. If you keep fish, a loss of aeration in summer can be fatal within a few hours: keep a spare pump or a backup power supply.
📏 Flow rate and depth
The maximum pressure limits the depth at which the pump can still push air: 0.012 MPa for the ACO-2201, equivalent to approximately 1.2 m of water; 0.015 MPa for the ACO-5503 and ACO-208; and 0.02 MPa for the ACO-318, equivalent to 2 m. The deeper and finer the diffuser, the more the actual flow rate drops compared to the stated flow rate, which is measured in open air. For a tank 30 to 40 cm deep, all models retain most of their flow rate, so the choice comes down to the volume to be oxygenated.
