JBL Floaty II aquarium glass cleaning magnet
This JBL Floaty II magnetic glass cleaner comes in three sizes, chosen according to the glass thickness: up to 6, 10 or 15 mm. Its inner element floats: if it comes loose, it rises to the surface instead of dropping into the sand.
The summary
- What you receive: a two-part Floaty II magnet, size S, M or L.
- How to choose: by the thickness of your glass, up to 6, 10 or 15 mm.
- How to use it: with circular movements, keeping your hand out of the water.
- If it comes off: the inner part floats and rises to the surface.
- The precaution to take: keep 2 or 3 cm away from the sand to avoid scratching the glass.
- Shipping: small parcel, can be combined with the rest of your order.
Magnetic glass cleaner, to be chosen according to the thickness of the glass
The Floaty II is a two-part magnetic cleaner: one piece goes in the water against the inside of the glass, the other is held in your hand against the outside. The magnet holds them together through the glass, so you move the outer piece and the inner piece follows, scraping off the film of algae, without your hand going into the water. It suits both freshwater and marine aquariums.
🧲 Glass thickness
You choose the size on a single criterion, the thickness of your glass: size S is designed for glass up to 6 mm, M up to 10 mm and L up to 15 mm. Measure this thickness on the top edge of the glass, using a steel rule or a calliper, as it determines the magnetic pull required. A magnet that is too weak for your glass will come loose as soon as you move it quickly, while a magnet designed for thicker glass pulls the two parts together so firmly that it becomes hard to slide and reposition. The tank volume, on the other hand, plays no part.
🧽 The cleaning action
Place the inner element on the water, at the edge of the tank, then bring the outer element up against the glass: the attraction brings the submerged part round to face your hand. Then clean using circular movements, slightly overlapping each pass. The overhanging edge of the magnet reaches awkward spots, behind a filter pipe or a heater, and its bevelled edges protect the silicone seals when you pass near a corner. The tool is designed for flat glass, because on a curved pane the two elements do not stay opposite each other.
The grain of sand that scratches the glass
Stop the magnet 2 or 3 cm from the grow medium. A grain of sand or gravel caught between the cleaning face and the glass leaves a straight scratch that is permanent and perfectly visible from the front. Finish the bottom strip with a cleaning mitt, and check the face of the inner element before each session.
A glove for the decor and the plants
For corners, decor, roots and plant leaves, pick up the anti-algae cleaning glove for aquariums at the same time. With your hand inside the glove, you can follow the contours that the flat face of the magnet cannot match. That way you clean the glass with the magnet and the rest of the tank with the glove, in the same session. Do keep the glove for glass and hard surfaces, though, as its metal fibres will mark acrylic.
If the inner element comes away from the outer element, when passing a seal or an obstacle, it floats and rises to the surface instead of dropping into the sand. You retrieve it by hand without digging through the grow medium or moving the decor, and gravel does not get wedged under its cleaning face. After each session, rinse both elements in clean water and leave them to dry out of the water, because algae left on the inner face dry into a crust and get in the way of the next pass.
🌿 The algae film and maintenance
The green film that forms on the lit side of a glass pane depends on light and on the nutrients dissolved in the water, two factors covered in detail in the article on pond algae in summer, and which work in just the same way in an aquarium. A recent film comes off in a few passes, whereas an old deposit means pressing harder and raises the risk of scratching. Cleaning regularly, for example once a week on a lit tank, therefore keeps your glass clean with the least effort. What comes loose falls to the bottom, where a gravel cleaner sucks it up at the next water change.
