Aeroponic pot for 5 plants, 5 or 8 cm baskets
The CultiMate Aero is a low-pressure aeroponic pot for 5 plants. The roots hang above a 45 L reservoir and are continuously misted by two rails, fed by a submersible pump, with no grow medium at all.
The baskets come in two sizes at the same price: 5 cm for cuttings and young plants, or 8 cm for a shop-bought root ball.
The summary
- What it is: an aeroponic growing pot for 5 plants. The roots hang in open air above a 45 L reservoir and are sprayed continuously by two spray bars.
- Two basket sizes: 5 cm, sized for cuttings and young plants, or 8 cm, which take a shop-bought plug. Same price, same equipment, apart from this detail.
- No grow medium to buy: the roots develop in the air, in a permanent mist, and nothing goes in the bin at the end of the cycle.
- Speed, and its trade-off: the fine root mass forms in a few days, but a bare root dries out in 1 to 2 hours without spraying.
- What you choose to go with it: something to wedge the plants into the baskets, a complete hydroponic nutrient and a way to read the pH.
- Dimensions: about 47 x 47 x 43 cm, 4.32 kg empty.
Low-pressure aeroponics, 5 plants on a 45 L reservoir, 5 or 8 cm baskets
The CultiMate Aero grows roots without any grow medium, in the humid air of its reservoir. The 5 baskets sit in the lid of a 45 L reservoir; the roots pass through the basket and hang in the open space below. Underneath them, two spray bars mist the solution continuously.
The pump
A 6.5 W submersible pump, 600 litres per hour, sits at the bottom of the reservoir. This aquarium-type model can be replaced separately.
The rails
These are two 26 cm spray tubes and their two 180-degree diffusers, connected to the pump by a Y fitting.
The reservoir
It holds 45 L, with its transparent level tube on the side, which you can read without opening the lid.
The baskets
The 5 slotted baskets of 5 or 8 cm sit in the lid. This is the only point that distinguishes the two versions.
🫧 Low-pressure aeroponics
A submersible pump placed at the bottom of the 45 L reservoir sends the solution to two spray bars fitted under the lid. The roots, which hang freely in the reservoir space, are watered constantly by a coarse mist. They never sit in water and live in air saturated with moisture, which gives them access to much more oxygen than a submerged root. The spraying is continuous, unlike a sequenced drip system, so there is no timer to set and no cycle to work out before starting up.
🧽 Diffusers that rinse clean
High-pressure aeroponics, by contrast, produces a mist of a few tens of microns, using a diaphragm pump and calibrated nozzles that clog at the first deposit. Here the spray is coarser and the pump is an aquarium pump: you lose some droplet fineness, but you gain tolerance. A fouled diffuser can be taken apart and rinsed in clean water, with no tools and no adjustments to redo. This is also what sets this system apart from deep water culture, where the roots sit in the solution: here, they never soak. The two diffusers pointing at 180 degrees overlap at the centre of the reservoir, and all you need to do is set them flat again after each clean so that the 5 positions receive the same spray.
The pump to monitor, the pebbles to rinse
Power cut, seized pump, blocked diffuser: here the reaction time is counted in hours, not days. Make sure you have a reliable socket, check the spraying at every visit, and keep something to hand-water with if you are away for more than a day. The second pitfall is more subtle, since clay pebbles added without rinsing release a fine dust that ends up in the diffusers. Rinse them until the water runs clear, and take both diffusers apart each time you change the solution.
Where the plants come from
If you are starting from cuttings, the 27-site cloner produces the plants these baskets are waiting for. If you are starting from seedlings, the seedling and cutting pack brings together the supports and the starter nutrients.
🌱 What bare roots gain
A root needs oxygen to absorb nutrients: uptake is active transport, which uses energy. In water, oxygen is scarce and is replenished slowly; in air saturated with humidity, it is available all the time. That is why you will see a dense, white mass of fine roots form within a few days. The flip side is dependence: without misting, a bare root dries out in 1 to 2 hours in hot weather, whereas a grow medium would hold moisture for the day. This mass of fine roots then fills all the space available under the lid, and it is what you should watch to judge the state of the crop: white and supple, it is healthy; brown and slimy, it is short of oxygen or the solution has gone above 22 °C.
🥬 What you grow in it
The 5 sites of 5 cm suit cuttings, young plants, salads and herbs; the 8 cm baskets take a shop-bought plug. Plants go in already rooted, in a rockwool cube or an established cutting, wedged with a handful of rinsed clay pebbles: a bare seed has nothing to hold on to. Our guide to setting up your seedling area covers this preliminary step, and our article on what to plant season by season gives the growing cycles. Taproot species, such as carrot or beetroot, have no place here, as there is no volume for them to explore. The 5 sites are lined up on the lid with no way of spacing them out, which fixes the density once and for all: with salads the foliage closes up and the whole thing fits in less than half a square metre, whereas 5 basil plants trained upwards need regular pruning so that the plants in the middle keep their light.
🧪 A solution with no buffer
Without a grow medium, the whole root mass draws directly from the 45 litres of solution, whose pH shifts as the ions are absorbed. The pH should therefore be read every 2 days at the start, then weekly, and corrected towards 5.8 to 6.2 before the leaves show any deficiency. The same volume is replaced completely every 2 to 3 weeks, simply topping up the evaporation with clean water between two changes. A pH adjustment takes about ten minutes to spread through the circuit, as the pump stirs constantly, and the check reading is taken after that delay rather than immediately after pouring. Conductivity follows the same monitoring rhythm, and it is read alongside the level: a volume that falls while the conductivity rises indicates that the plants are absorbing proportionally more water than nutrients, and a top-up of clean water corrects that imbalance better than adding fertiliser.
⚡ Dependence on the pump
Everything relies on a single part, so its condition should be checked on every visit. A dull hum with no visible jet means the impeller is blocked by debris; a jet that weakens on one side only points to a partly blocked diffuser, whereas a drop on both sides comes from the pump's strainer. Rinse it in clean water, and descale it with diluted white vinegar if your water is hard. The original pump, a 600 L/h submersible pump, can be ordered on its own: keeping a spare to hand saves you from watering the roots by hand while you wait for a delivery.
