Solar water pump with battery, 300 L/h
This solar water pump circulates up to 300 litres per hour without any mains socket. Its panel charges a battery station, which powers the pump even at night and in cloudy weather.
A built-in timer runs it for 10 minutes every hour, matching the rhythm of an ebb and flow table.
The summary
- What you receive: a 300 L/h submersible pump, its battery station and a solar panel on a spike.
- How it works: the panel charges the battery, which powers the pump even at night and in overcast weather.
- The two modes: continuous, or 10 minutes per hour thanks to the timer built into the station.
- The working height: the pump lifts water up to 1.2 m above itself, with the flow adjustable by dial.
- How to choose: with no socket within reach, the solar pump; with a socket, the 600 L/h mains pump.
- What is sent to you: a 1.94 kg parcel.
Submersible pump on a solar panel and battery, for an ebb-and-flow table with no mains socket
An ebb-and-flow table, a small grow bed or a fountain set up at the bottom of a garden often has no power socket within reach, and running a cable out there is the most awkward part of the project. This solar water pump solves the problem: you put the pump in the reservoir, set the panel in the sun, and the battery station linking them circulates up to 300 litres of water per hour. It is the pump fitted to the solar version of the 10-pot ebb-and-flow table, and you can use it for any small system that needs to run without a mains connection.
🔋 The battery station
The kit comprises three elements connected by cables. The photovoltaic panel produces a direct current that enters the control unit at 9 V. The unit stores this energy in its battery, then powers the pump at a voltage between 6 and 9 V, which you select using a dial on its front face. This voltage directly controls the pump speed: by lowering it, you reduce the flow rate, which spares the battery when the tank to be filled is small or when sunlight weakens. Thanks to this energy reserve, the pump keeps running at night and in overcast weather. It consumes 5 W and pushes water up to 1.2 m above its own level, which more than covers the difference in height between a reservoir on the ground and the grow bed above it.
The panel
It attaches to an adjustable support and is planted in the ground with its two-part stake, facing the midday sun.
The station
It carries the battery, the flow-rate adjustment dial and two buttons, one for on/off, the other for the timer.
The pump
This 5 W submersible pump delivers up to 300 L/h and pushes water to a height of 1.2 m at most, through a male outlet.
The timer
Once activated, it runs the pump for 10 minutes every hour, which saves the battery and is enough to flood a tank.
🕙 Two operating modes
The station offers two ways of running the pump. In continuous mode, the "System" button starts the pump, and it runs without interruption for as long as the battery holds a charge: this is the mode for a fountain, for stirring the water or for permanent circulation. In timer mode, the "Timer" button starts a cycle of 10 minutes running per hour, after which the pump stops for the next 50 minutes. This rhythm is calculated to make the best use of the stored energy, particularly in winter or during a cloudy spell, when the panel recharges less. It also matches the way an ebb-and-flow table works, where the tray fills over a few minutes before draining by gravity, so you have no programmer to buy or set.
The ebb and flow table supplied with this kit
If you are starting from scratch, the 10-pot ebb and flow table is available in a solar version, fitted with this pump, its control unit and its panel. You then receive the grow bed, the 100 L reservoir and the fabric pots in the same order, and the whole set-up can be installed on a terrace or in the vegetable garden with no mains connection at all. The pump sold on its own is better suited to equipping a table already installed on mains power, or an ebb and flow bed that you have built yourself.
Keep the outlet below 1.2 m in height
The pump lifts water up to 1.2 m above its own level, and its flow rate drops as the height to be cleared increases. So measure the difference in level between the bottom of the reservoir and the highest point to be reached before installing it, because beyond this value the water will not arrive. A short pipe, with no unnecessary bends, keeps the flow at its best.
☀️ Positioning the panel
The panel's output depends above all on the direct light it receives, and the autonomy of your installation follows from that. Push the stake into an open spot facing due south, then adjust the tilt of the bracket so that the panel faces the sun during the middle hours of the day. Shade, even partial, noticeably reduces production: in spring, keep an eye on the shadow cast by foliage as it develops, because a spot that is well exposed in March can end up under a tree by June. Wipe the surface of the panel when dust or pollen settles on it. The panel stays outdoors all season, while the base unit, which contains the battery and the connections, should be placed somewhere dry, sheltered from the rain.
🌊 On an ebb-and-flow table
On an ebb-and-flow table, the pump sitting in the reservoir fills the grow bed above it, then the water drains back down by gravity as soon as the pump stops. The timer mode therefore sets the rhythm of the floods all by itself: one flood per hour, during which the solution floods the grow medium and feeds it, then 50 minutes while the bed empties and the roots breathe. With a flow rate of 300 L/h, the bed takes roughly twice as long to fill as it does with the mains-powered version's pump, which delivers 600, though the principle stays the same. The grow medium matters too: coir holds its moisture from one flood to the next, whereas clay pebbles, which dry out quickly, make the most of one flood per hour.
🐟 In aquaponics
Flooding followed by draining is also the principle behind the clay pebble grow beds used in aquaponics, where water from a fish pond alternates with air around the roots. This pump can feed a small bed of this kind set up far from the house, provided you bear in mind what sets the two systems apart. In hydroponics, a pump that stops simply leaves the grow medium damp for a few hours. In aquaponics, the circulation also carries the fish water to the bacteria in the bed, which turn their waste into nitrates your plants can absorb. After several days without sun, the battery eventually runs flat and the pump stops: for a stocked pond, therefore, plan for backup circulation and aeration on mains power. Our article on the difference between aquaponics and hydroponics sets the two systems side by side.
🔧 Maintenance and winterising
The submersible pump draws in water through its inlet grille, which particles of grow medium and algae eventually block. Take it out of the reservoir at each renewal of the solution and rinse it in clean water, because a clogged inlet reduces the flow with no visible sign, until the day the tank no longer reaches its level during the 10 minutes of the cycle. If your water is hard, soaking in diluted white vinegar removes limescale from the impeller. Before the first frosts, drain the system and bring the pump and the station into a dry, frost-free room, where they spend the winter. The pump is guaranteed for 2 years against manufacturing defects.
