A two-stage treatment against sludge and algae, to revive the bacterial life of the pond

Over the seasons, a pond accumulates leaves, uneaten food and waste, which settle as sludge on the bottom. This organic matter feeds algae and uses up oxygen as it breaks down. The Aquatic Science Duo Pack tackles this build-up in two stages. On the first day, you spread Biobooster+, a powder that stimulates the beneficial micro-organisms responsible for breaking down organic matter. On the following days, Bactogen, a concentrated blend of spore-forming bacteria, minerals and trace elements, takes over.

🦠 Why two products

Biobooster+ prepares the ground: it contains no chemical anti-algae agent and nothing toxic to fish, it simply speeds up the breakdown of sludge and organic pollution, which deprives the algae of part of their food. Bactogen then seeds the water and the filter with a dense bacterial population: its bacteria attach to the filter media and to the pond's surfaces, where they carry on this work and help in the conversion of ammonia. In each pack, the Bactogen is intended for a larger volume than the Biobooster+, double in the S, M and L sizes, so as to also cover maintenance over the following weeks.

🥄 Doses and temperature

The dose is 60 g of Biobooster+ and 5 g of Bactogen per 1,000 litres. The water must be above 14 °C for Biobooster+ and 10 °C for Bactogen: the course is therefore started in spring, as the pond warms up, or in summer when algae take hold. Once opened, the tubs keep for 6 months, in a dry place, between 10 and 25 °C. If your pond holds 5,000 litres, the M size is the right one: 300 g of Biobooster+ on the first day, then 25 g of Bactogen each day from the second to the fifth, before moving on to one dose per week. Spread the doses near the filter's water inlet, where the current disperses them best.

Phosphates, to be measured after the course

Once the sludge has broken down, it is mainly dissolved phosphates that feed the algae. A phosphate test carried out at the end of the course tells you whether too much is left in the water. If the value stays high, the anti-phosphate treatment for ponds binds them, which removes the algae's main reserve for the rest of the season.

A course of treatment for the ornamental pond

This treatment is designed for the water of an ornamental garden pond. If your pond also feeds tanks of edible crops, keep it for a body of water that is separate from the growing circuit.

📅 The course week by week

Take a 5,000-litre pond treated with the M size at the start of May. In the first week, Biobooster+ followed by the four daily doses of Bactogen kick off the breakdown: the water may turn slightly cloudy for a few days while the sludge decomposes. From the second week, one dose of Bactogen a week maintains the bacterial population. Over the following weeks, the layer of sludge thins, the water gains clarity and filamentous algae find less to feed on.

During the course, keep the filter and pump running day and night, and aerate well: the bacteria that break down the sludge consume a lot of oxygen, especially in hot weather. If the pond has a UV lamp, switch it off for 2 or 3 days after each addition to let the bacteria settle. Also avoid cleaning the filter thoroughly during these weeks: just rinse it in pond water if the flow drops.

A single course per season is enough for most ponds, and the guide to pond algae in summer details the other measures that complement it, shading and filtering plants. In a pond under large trees, which receives a lot of leaves in autumn, a second course at the end of summer prepares the pond for winter by reducing the sludge before the first frosts. Net out the largest deposits before you begin: the treatment works faster on a thin layer than on a heavily loaded bottom.
