The summary

  • What you receive: a pressurised pond filter, its 3,200 L/h pump and 5 m of pipe.
  • For which pond: 10,000 L without fish, 5,000 L with fish, 2,500 L with koi.
  • What pressure changes: the filter can be buried and the water returns up to 2.9 m higher.
  • Maintenance: one backwash roughly every 4 weeks, without opening the tank.
  • How to choose: pressurised or gravity-fed, the choice depends on the lie of the land.
  • Running costs: 55 W, or about 482 kWh for a year of continuous running.

Pressurised tank for ponds up to 5,000 litres with fish, backwashable

This kit combines a closed pond filter, a submersible pump rated at 3,200 litres per hour and 5 metres of 1-inch spiral pipe. The set handles a pond of 10,000 litres without fish, 5,000 litres with fish and 2,500 litres with koi. The filter sits at the water's edge, the pump on the bottom of the pond, and a single socket is enough to run the circuit continuously from spring to autumn.

The difference from an open filtration tank lies in the tank itself, which is sealed and pressurised. The water does not leave it by overflowing but through a pipe that maintains the pressure given by the pump, so you can send it back higher than the filter itself, to a waterfall or the head of a stream. This is also what allows backwashing, since the closed tank can be flowed through in both directions under the push of the pump.

🛢️ The pressure filter

In a gravity filter, the water enters at the top, passes through the media and returns to the pond by gravity: the tank must therefore be placed higher than the water surface, and the return is made by a simple drop. Here, the tank is sealed and the water still leaves under pressure. This opens up two uses that the other principle does not allow. You can partly bury the filter at the edge of the pond, with the head and its fittings remaining accessible, so that it disappears from the landscape. You can also send the water back to the head of a stream or a waterfall located above the pond level, as long as you stay within the pump's delivery head, which is 2.9 metres. The filter body measures 320 millimetres in diameter by 540 millimetres in height, which gives the size of the hole to dig if you choose to conceal it.

📐 The pond and its stock

This filter accepts three pond volumes, which correspond to three different loads. A planted 10,000-litre pond with no fish produces almost no nitrogen, whereas a stocked pond produces it every day, and a koi pond produces even more. This is why the range falls to 5,000 litres with fish and to 2,500 litres with koi. Work out your actual volume, length by width by average depth, then compare it with the volume permitted for what you keep.

Green water is treated on the same line

Green water cannot be cured by mechanical filtration alone, because the suspended algae are too fine to be caught by the foams and simply pass through again and again. The EHEIM Clear UVC pond UV steriliser is fitted on the same 1-inch pipe line, between the pump and the filter, and acts on these algae, which the filter then retains. Choose its power according to the volume of your pond and what lives in it: with fish, the 11 W model already covers the use of this kit.

With koi, the pond is capped at 2,500 litres

The figure of 10,000 litres applies to a pond without fish, and it is the one people notice first. As soon as fish live in the pond, the permissible volume falls to 5,000 litres, and to 2,500 litres if those fish are koi. Check your stock before ordering, otherwise the filter will constantly run beyond its capacity and the water will stay cloudy despite equipment in good working order.

🔙 Backwashing

The filter head has three fittings: IN for the inlet from the pump, OUT for the return to the pond and DIRTY for the wash water, the latter staying closed with a plug during normal operation. A control knob selects between two positions. On WORK, the water from the pump passes through the media and returns to the pond; on CLEAN, the pump pushes the water in the opposite direction and sends it to the DIRTY fitting. To wash the filter, unplug the pump, screw a drain pipe onto DIRTY, switch to CLEAN, then plug the pump back in and let it run until the discharged water is clearly cleaner, keeping an eye on the pond level.

The action

The control knob turns from WORK to CLEAN, without opening the tank or taking out the sponges.

What happens

The water flows through the media in the opposite direction and lifts the sludge trapped in the foams.

Where the sludge goes

It comes out through the DIRTY fitting, extended by a pipe that you direct towards a flower bed.

The pace

One wash roughly every 4 weeks maintains the flow without disturbing the bacterial colony.

🧽 A complete clean of the tank

The backwash does not replace opening the unit up from time to time. Inspect the inside of the tank about every 3 months: with the pump unplugged and the pipes removed, undo the 6 clasps of the clamping ring and lift off the lid. The tank contains two coarse blue foams, two baskets of FILTERMEC spirals and two fine blue foams. Rinse these elements in cold water, hose down the inside of the tank, then put everything back in reverse order, checking that the lugs of the ring seat properly in their slots. A foam that no longer springs back into shape should be replaced with replacement foams for the PRESS filter, coarse or fine.

🌿 Towards a grow bed

A stocked pond continuously produces ammonia, which the bacteria living in the filter media convert into nitrite and then into nitrate. This nitrate builds up in the water and only goes down with a water change, or with plants that consume it. A grow bed connected to the circuit therefore lets the plants take up this nitrate, which serves as fertiliser for them instead of accumulating in the pond. The pressure available at the tank outlet is put to use a second time here, since it allows you to supply a grow bed placed higher than the pond and let the water return to it by gravity. The guide to the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics sets out these stages and the measurements that follow them.

🧰 Installation and the pipe

The spiral pipe supplied is 5 metres long in 1 inch, and it is shared between the inlet, from the pump to the IN fitting, and the return, from the OUT fitting to the discharge point. This length determines the layout: the pump sits at the bottom of the pond and the filter is placed a few metres away, at the edge. If your project needs more, or if you want a dedicated pipe for the backwash outlet, the spiral pipe can be bought again in a 5 m coil of the same diameter. The pump cable is 10 metres long and must reach a protected, sheltered outdoor socket. Finally, make sure the filter stays accessible once in place, since you will need to reach the adjustment knob every month and the lid clasps every quarter.

The pump is placed flat, on a firm base, in a spot where its housing stays covered by at least 20 cm of water. It has overheating protection that switches it off if the level gets too low, for example when evaporation lowers the water level in summer. The circuit is designed for water between 4 and 35 °C, in a garden pond with or without fish; it is not suitable for a natural swimming pond. Finally, secure each pipe to its nozzle with a hose clamp, so that no fitting comes loose under pressure.

❄️ Overwintering the filter

As frost approaches, the filter and the pump are cleaned and then stored away, in a frost-free room. Because the bacterial colony in the media does not survive this prolonged shutdown, the spring restart is a bit like a small commissioning: the water may stay cloudy for a few weeks while the bacteria re-establish themselves. Concentrated pond bacteria added as soon as the water rises above 10 °C shorten this period, and the guide to feeding pond fish in winter helps you resume rations in step with the water temperature.

Pressure filter or gravity filter

Both clean pond water, but they are not placed in the same spot.

Can't decide between the two principles? A closed tank pushes the water higher and hides in the substrate, while an open tank deals with green algae.
