Hobby Aqua Cooler cooling fan for aquariums
This fan clips onto the rim of the tank and blows across the water surface. The evaporation it causes lowers the temperature by up to 4 °C, depending on how warm the room is.
Three models cover tanks from 10 to 50 L, tanks up to 300 L and larger volumes, and the Aqua Cooler Control thermostat controls the V4 and V6.
The summary
- Which model: V1 from 10 to 50 L, V4 up to 300 L, V6 above 300 L.
- How much it cools: up to 4 °C lower, depending on the temperature and humidity of the room.
- How it connects: via USB-C for the V1, to the supplied 12 V transformer for the V4 and V6.
- The thermostat: it switches the V4 or V6 on at the temperature you choose.
A fan that cools the tank water by evaporation, without a chiller
In summer, the water in an aquarium or rearing tank follows the temperature of the room, and it quickly exceeds the 26 °C that most aquarium fish tolerate well. This fan blows across the water surface and speeds up evaporation, which carries heat away with it. The temperature of your tank drops by up to 4 °C as a result, depending on the heat and humidity of the room, with no compressor or water circuit to install.
🌬️ Three models depending on volume
The V1 model has a single fan and suits a tank of 10 to 50 litres. It plugs into a USB-C port and offers two speeds. The V4 and V6 models line up four or six fans on an aluminium bar and are supplied with their 12 V transformer: the V4 covers tanks up to 300 litres, the V6 larger volumes. On both of these bars, each fan tilts up to 55° to aim at the water surface, even when the level drops.
Tank of 10 to 50 L
The V1 is enough, on glass up to 8 mm thick.
Tank up to 300 L
The V4 and its four fans are secured with two screw clamps.
Tank of more than 300 L
The V6 carries six fans on a 42.5 cm bar.
Thick glass
The V4 and V6 clamps fit glass up to 22 mm thick.
Position the fan where air circulates freely over the water, away from filter outlets and diffusers that throw up droplets. Switch it on early in the morning, before the room warms up, because it is easier to stop the temperature from rising than to bring it back down afterwards. Evaporation lowers the water level every day: top up this volume with fresh water at the same temperature, added gradually, so that the mineral salts do not become concentrated.
A thermometer placed opposite the fan
The suction-cup aquarium thermometer, placed on the side opposite the fan, shows you the real temperature of the tank during the hot hours. You then know whether the water stays below the value your fish can tolerate. If it does not, bring forward the switch-on time or move up to the larger model.
🎛️ The Aqua Cooler Control thermostat
The Aqua Cooler Control thermostat automates the V4 and V6. It connects between the transformer and the fan bar, and its probe, on a cable of about 1.2 m, goes into the water. Its screen shows the tank temperature, and you set, to the nearest degree between 1 and 40 °C, the value at which the fans switch on. Three programmable speeds let you adjust the airflow to the heat. It does not work with the V1, which is powered via USB-C.
On a 200-litre tank fitted with a V4, a setting of 25 °C leaves the fans off on cool days and switches them on as soon as the room warms up, without you having to think about it. This limits evaporation, and therefore top-ups of water, to the hours when cooling is actually useful. The thermostat also stops you forgetting to leave the fan running on a stormy evening, when the air cools suddenly.
🌱 In aquaponics
In a rearing tank, water that is too warm creates two difficulties at once: the water holds less oxygen, while the fish and the filter bacteria consume more of it. Salmonids, such as trout, salmon, charr and grayling, are the most sensitive. In a small indoor aquaponic tank, a V4 controlled by the thermostat keeps a safety margin during heatwaves. The article on looking after your aquaponic system in summer sets out the other things to do through the season.
The evaporation that cools the water also lowers the level, and a ventilated tank can lose several litres a day in the height of summer. So plan on regular top-ups, using water at the same temperature and, if it comes from the tap, treated against chlorine. The article on evaporation in summer explains how to make up this loss without shocking your fish.

Which fan for your tank?
The same principle in three sizes. What sets them apart is the volume of water to be cooled and the power supply.
