JBL ProPond AutoFood automatic pond fish feeder, solar-powered
The JBL ProPond AutoFood feeds the fish in a pond up to 24 times a day, from a 25-litre pellet hopper. It runs on its solar panel and battery, or plugged into the mains, and it displays the water temperature.
The summary
- How many meals: up to 24 a day, 10 portion levels.
- What capacity: up to 25 litres of food.
- What power supply: solar panel and battery, or mains.
- What it displays: the water temperature, and when the supply is running low.
A pond fed at set times, even while you are away
A koi grows better and fouls the water less when it receives several small meals spread through the day rather than one large ration in the evening. Few pond owners, however, can be at the water's edge 4 or 5 times a day, and the JBL ProPond AutoFood provides these meals for you. Placed at the edge of the pond, it dispenses food up to 24 times a day, at times you programme, with 10 portion levels. Its hopper holds up to 25 litres of food, enough to cover weeks of meals for a pond of good-sized koi.
☀️ Solar, battery or mains
The device does not need a power socket beside the pond. An integrated solar panel recharges a 7,200 mAh lithium-ion battery, which keeps the feeds going for more than a week without sun, and for up to about 3 weeks depending on the quantity dispensed. In autumn and early spring, when light is scarce, a recharge from the mains may be necessary. If your pond is heavily shaded, the mains power supply provided, with its 5 m cable, takes over. A probe measures the water temperature and shows it on the screen, which tells you at a glance which food formula to open. Two red indicator lights show when the hopper is nearly empty.
Meal
The unit dispenses up to 24 meals a day at programmed times, and manual dispensing is still possible.
Portion
The portion can be set to 10 levels, depending on the size and number of your fish.
Range
The food is thrown 0.5 m or 1 m from the edge, towards the chosen area.
Feed
The hopper accepts pond pellets up to 9 mm.
📐 Installing it properly
Place the AutoFood on a flat, stable surface, with the ejection outlet no more than 20 cm from the water, in a bright spot but out of permanent direct sunlight, which would heat the feed in the hopper. M8 screws housed in the feet allow it to be fixed down if needed. Set the throw distance to 0.5 or 1 m depending on the distance between the edge and the area where your fish come to feed, put the temperature probe in the water, otherwise it will display the air temperature, then programme the times and the portion. The unit measures 375 x 375 x 462 mm and has recessed handles for moving it. Take a 15 m³ pond with 20 kg of koi in July: at 2% of body weight, the daily ration is 400 g, split into 8 meals of 50 g between 8 am and 8 pm, with each feed coming at least 5 minutes after the previous one. Run a few test feeds over a set of scales to find the portion setting that matches, and repeat this test whenever you change feed.
Pellets, never flakes
The mechanism only accepts pellets of 9 mm or less, and flake foods are not suitable. In prolonged direct sunlight, the temperature inside the hopper rises sharply and spoils the food: in hot weather, fill it less and more often.
A floating pellet food for the reservoir
The All Seasons food comes as floating pellets in several sizes, all of which pass through the mechanism. Because it floats, you can see from the edge what your fish have eaten after each programmed feed, and adjust the portion accordingly. It can be fed in water from 12 to 25 °C, which covers most of the year, so you avoid changing the food in the hopper often.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, fish food is the plants' source of nitrogen. Small, regular meals give a steadier supply of ammonium, which the filter bacteria nitrify as it arrives, instead of a spike after a large evening ration. The crops benefit, and the water stays clearer. The AutoFood is best suited to large-volume outdoor fish tanks, or to a pond connected to grow beds. If you are going away, the guide on aquaponics and holidays lists what to prepare before you leave.
🗓️ Following the season
The temperature displayed guides the setting throughout the year. Above 20 °C, increase the number of meals and choose a growth or colour food. Between 12 and 20 °C, switch to a maintenance food such as All Seasons food, reducing the number of meals. Below 12 °C, a few feeds a week of a cool-water food are enough, and feeding then stops below 8 °C. Do still check on your fish regularly, as meals at fixed times make them easy to observe and you quickly spot the one that keeps apart; also remove any food that is still floating after a few minutes and empty the hopper before changing formula, so as not to mix two foods.
🔧 Maintenance and refilling
Fill the hopper with dry feed, and only with the amount your fish will eat within a few weeks: feed left for a long time in a hopper exposed to the sun loses its vitamins and can take on moisture. Close the lid firmly after each refill, and check that no pellet is stuck in the outlet. Once a month in season, and at least once a season, empty the hopper completely, brush out the feed dust that has built up at the bottom and around the mechanism, and clean the solar panel with a damp cloth, as a layer of pollen or dust reduces its charging. Also check the temperature probe, which can become covered in algae and give a false reading. Before going on holiday, start the programme a few days in advance, check the amount dispensed and the state of the battery, and plan a slightly reduced ration: an adult fish copes very well with a few days of smaller meals, whereas an excess of uneaten feed degrades the water while you are away. On your return, compare the remaining reserve with what you expected in order to fine-tune the setting.
