Floating pellets for koi and pond fish, for water temperatures of 12 to 25 °C

These floating pellets are suited to koi carp, goldfish, and other ornamental fish in a garden pond. They contain 33.5% protein and 8.9% fat, a mid-range value that allows them to be fed throughout most of the year. The pellets remain on the surface for the duration of feeding, letting you observe how much is actually consumed and net out anything that has not been taken. Whatever sinks to the bottom decomposes and adds to the nitrogen load that your filtration must then handle.

🌡️ Temperature controls everything

Pond fish are cold-blooded, which means their digestion follows the water temperature rather than the calendar. As the water cools, gut transit slows by a factor of two to four between summer and winter, and gastric emptying extends accordingly. Food given in cold water therefore spends far longer in a sluggish digestive tract, and a greater proportion of its contents goes unabsorbed. This food is designed to be used between 12 and 25 °C. Below that threshold, your fish will stop asking to be fed of their own accord, and that cessation of feeding is entirely normal behaviour.

🥣 What portion, and how often

The overriding rule is the five-minute rule. Feed the amount your fish consume in five minutes at most, once or twice a day, then remove anything still floating. It adjusts itself to the temperature and appetite of the day, something no percentage-based approach can do. For a first weighing, allow roughly 1.5 to 2% of body weight per day for adult fish, with yearlings eating more. In an aquaponic system, this ration governs both the growth of your fish and the nitrogen available to your plants, and any increase will show up on an ammonium test before it becomes visible on the leaves.

Above 20 °C

Digestion is quick and appetite sustained. A richer feed at 39.5 % protein is therefore better suited to the growing season.

12 to 20 °C

The window during which this feed is all you need. A single bag covers the period, with no change of formula or routine.

Below 12 °C

The ration is gradually reduced, then stopped altogether. The floating Wheat Germ food, effective between 5 and 15 °C, takes over until spring.

The thermometer determines the formula

Two accessories go hand in hand with this bag. A floating thermometer tells you which formula to open, and a graduated cup lets you weigh out a first meal. When the temperature is consistently above 20 °C, the colour-enhancing food is the better choice, while below 12 °C the floating wheatgerm food takes over. All three can be found in the pond fish food range.

Water temperature and storage

Do not confuse air temperature with the water temperature in your pond, because it is the latter that matters, and it should be measured in the morning. Do not maintain the summer ration above 25 °C, as warm water holds less oxygen. Do not keep an opened bag from one year to the next, as the lipids oxidise from the moment of opening. And never feed this food to ruminants or any other animal species, as the label states, because it contains fish meal.

📏 Choosing the size and format

Pellet size should be chosen based on the smallest fish in the pond, not the largest. The S pellet suits fish under around 15 cm and mixed ponds where several generations share the same water, while the M is intended for a uniform adult population. An oversized pellet leaves the smaller fish out of the feeding altogether, and nothing gives it away, the larger fish simply eat the lot. When it comes to pack size, the decision is better based on consumption rate than on price per kilo: an opened bag loses its nutritional quality within a few months, so a large format only makes sense for a pond that will empty it before the end of the season.

🐟 Feed and nitrogen load

Everything you feed your fish ends up in the water in one form or another. What the fish absorbs is excreted as ammonium through the gills, what it does not absorb is expelled as solid waste, and what it does not eat decomposes at the bottom. Increasing a ration by a third therefore raises the nitrogen load by the same proportion, regardless of whether your filtration can handle it. In an ornamental pond, this shows up first as reduced water clarity and a surge in filamentous algae. In aquaponics, that same quantity becomes the fertiliser for your crops, which changes the picture entirely: the ration is set according to the planted area as much as the fishes' appetite, and our article on the nitrogen cycle explains this balance in detail.

The minutes rule takes precedence, because it adjusts itself to the temperature and appetite of the day. The percentage also depends on age: a one-year-old fish can consume up to 5% of its body weight per day in warm water, whereas a three-year-old drops back towards 2%. Remove with a net any pellets still floating after five minutes.

Small or medium: which size to choose, and why the small only comes in 2 kg?

Small, 2 to 3 mm: suitable for fish of around 7 cm and above, including goldfish and young koi. It is only available here in a 2 kg bag, and that makes sense: a small fish eats very little, and a large bag would take months to work through.

Medium, 4 to 5 mm: suitable for fish of around 15 cm and above, and this is the size used for all other pack formats. A pellet that is too large gets spat out; one that is too small forces the fish to take many more mouthfuls and makes it impossible to judge the portion by eye.

How much ammonium does this food produce compared to the others?

For every hundred grams distributed over the day, the four feeds compare as follows:

In 10 m³, 3.2 g per day equates to 0.32 mg/L if the filter were treating nothing at all: that is what an ammonium test measures. The calculation assumes half the nitrogen is excreted, making it an upper estimate in a planted pond.

What to do with the bag when the fish stop feeding in autumn?

Reduce feeding frequency before reducing quantity: two meals a day between 12 and 18 °C, one only below that.
Below 12 °C, use up the remaining bag by cutting portions, then switch to floating wheat germ, one to three times a week.
Below 8 °C, stop feeding entirely and let your fish live off their reserves.
Store the remaining bag somewhere dry and out of direct light, and judge it by smell come spring rather than by the date.
Resume feeding when the water holds steadily above 10 °C, starting off gradually.

How long does an opened bag keep?

Trust the best-before date for a sealed bag, and use an opened bag within the season. It is opening that triggers oxidation, not the date.

What deteriorates over time is the lipid content, and this feed contains 8.9%. Three simple habits are all it takes:

reseal the bag after each use;
store it somewhere dry, out of direct light, away from areas that heat up in summer;
do not keep it from one year to the next.

The 1% factor is an industry benchmark, consistent with the 1.5 to 2% of biomass published by the FAO for Cyprinus carpio in pond conditions. It applies to adult fish; a one-year-old fish will eat more. The rule that takes precedence remains: only feed what is consumed within five minutes.
