The summary

4-week course against filamentous, beard and brush algae

Easy-Life's AlgExit algae treatment tackles beard algae, brush algae and filamentous algae in freshwater aquariums, and is safe for fish, shrimps, snails and plants. The course lasts 4 weeks, at 10 ml per 100 litres once a week, with the activated carbon removed from the filter.

You pour in 10 ml per 100 litres once a week, for 4 weeks, and you leave your tank stocked. The treatment targets most freshwater aquarium algae, in particular beard, brush and filamentous algae, and it remains harmless to fish, shrimps, snails and plants. The course can easily be extended if algae or spores are still present at the end of the 4 weeks.

🦐 Treating a stocked tank

The action happens in two stages. Algae growth stops first, so that a tuft no longer gains new leaves, then the existing algae disappear over the weeks of the course. The product also eliminates the spores still present in the water, that is, the cells that would recolonise the glass and the decor after a simple clean by hand. As it targets neither the fauna nor the flora of the tank, you do not have to move any inhabitants before the first dose.

Shrimp and snails

They stay in the tank throughout the treatment, with no spare tank to prepare.

The plants

They stay in place, since the product does not target them.

Remove the activated carbon and stick to the dose

A filter containing activated carbon captures the product before it can act, and the course then achieves nothing. Remove it before the first dose and put in fresh carbon once the 4 weeks are over. Never double the dose, since the course relies on a repeated weekly addition. Finally, keep the bottle out of the reach of children and pets.

Measuring phosphates during the treatment course

The PO4 phosphate drop test tells you whether the water still contains enough to feed algae while the treatment is working. Take one reading at the first dose and another at the last. A level that stays high points to a source you need to cut back, often feeding or an over-generous dose of fertiliser. You then know what to correct before the algae return after the course.

🧮 The dose for your tank

The dose is calculated on the actual volume of water, with decor and sand deducted, and not on the advertised volume of the tank. A 60-litre aquarium therefore receives 6 ml per week, or 24 ml for a complete course. Each size thus covers 6 courses for the tank it is intended for: the 250 ml bottle for 100 litres, the 500 ml bottle for 200 litres, and the 1 L bottle for 400 litres, at 40 ml per week in the latter case. An extension is simply counted in extra weeks, at the same dose.

🗓️ The course, then the cause

Algae appear when the tank's balance breaks down: too much food, too many fish, excessive lighting or fertilising, or spores arriving with a new fish or plant. While the treatment course is under way, measure your nitrates, check how many hours your lighting stays on, and keep track of what you feed. An algae bloom that returns after your last dose shows that the resource is still there. Fast-growing plants are part of the answer, since they consume the same nutrients as the algae and take up the light in their place.
