An olla, also spelled oya, is a porous terracotta pot that you bury near your plants and fill with water: the water seeps through the wall as the soil dries, right at root level. Choose the format according to the space available. In pots or planters, planting ollas of 15 to 50 cl release their contents over 24 to 36 hours. In the vegetable garden, the buried olla of 1, 2 or 6 L, 18 to 32 cm tall, moistens an area about twice its diameter; the largest one that fits will space out refills the most.
Watering spikes and mini ollas take an upturned bottle: with 1.5 L, a spike lasts 4 to 10 days depending on the plant and the heat, with one spike per pot or one every 15 cm in a planter. Ollas are frost-resistant and can stay in place over winter. To understand how they work, read All about ollas.
