An automatic feeder is not just for holidays. Its main purpose is to deliver the same quantity every day, at the same time, something no human hand truly manages. This model holds a 200 ml reservoir and can be programmed for up to four meals a day. That consistency matters as much for water balance as it does for the fish themselves, and it is something most buyers only appreciate after the fact.
🔌 A rechargeable battery rather than disposable batteries
The difference becomes apparent in use rather than at the point of purchase. A lithium battery rechargeable via USB cable lasts three to six months depending on the number of meals, then recharges in a few hours from any phone charger. There are no batteries to stock, and you will not come back from a weekend away to find the unit has switched off. The programming survives a recharge, which is not the case with all battery-powered units, and saves you having to re-enter everything twice a year.

🎛️ Adjusting the dose
Adjustment works in two stages: first by sliding the drum opening, then by setting the number of rotations per meal. That second control is invaluable in a heavily stocked tank, where a wide opening would be impossible to fine-tune, and it lets you double a ration without touching the mechanical setting. The display remains readable once the unit is mounted, so you never need to unhook it just to check a feeding time.
Check the setting with a measurement
A poorly calibrated feeder will not show on the fish for several weeks, but it will show in the water within a few days. A test kit taken a week after start-up will tell you whether the ration is being processed, and an ammonium test alone is sufficient for subsequent checks. It is the only objective way to validate an automatic feeding setting, since you are no longer there to observe the meal.
Condensation is the enemy of every dispenser.
Position it as far as possible from the filter outlet and air stone, keep its hopper two-thirds full so that food flows freely without bridging, and choose pellets over flakes, which clump together more quickly in humid air. A closed aquarium lid makes the problem noticeably worse, and in that case it is better to place the unit over an opening rather than in the middle of the surface.
📅 Feeding frequency determines nitrogen
In a system where fish, bacteria, and plants share the same water, everything that goes in as food comes back out as nitrogen. Regular feeding produces a regular load that your biofilter absorbs steadily and your plants take up as the water flows through. This is the exact opposite of a large feed on Sunday and nothing on Tuesday, which creates an ammonium spike followed by a trough. 🧪 Finding the right dose
Start by deliberately under-dosing, and increase from there. Run a test over a sheet of white paper, count what falls, and only increase by one notch if everything is consumed within two minutes. A week of under-dosing does no harm to an adult fish, whereas a week of over-dosing loads your water and shows up in a nitrite test. Repeat this test with every feed change, as a denser pellet passes through in greater quantity for the same setting, and that is the most common mistake after a straightforward brand change. Finally, note the chosen setting somewhere, such as on a label stuck under the unit, as an accidental reset would otherwise mean starting the whole process from scratch.
