Sinking wood-fibre wafers for herbivorous bottom-dwelling catfish
These wafers feed herbivorous catfish that spend their time clinging to the décor. They sink quickly to the bottom and hold their shape there for several minutes, rather than breaking apart on the way down. The ingredients list opens with wheat germ and spinach, and it includes one raw material that no other food in the range declares: wood fibre.
🪵 11% cellulose
The fibre content here reaches 11%, compared with 2 to 4% in other aquarium foods on the shelf. This is a direct result of the wood fibre and plant-based ingredients that dominate the recipe: spinach, spirulina, green meal and sugar beet pulp. Protein remains low at 29%, and fat at 7%. One consequence is worth bearing in mind for your water quality: at the same ration, a 29% protein formula introduces less nitrogen than a 42% formula, which your filter and your plants will both reflect, something our article on the nitrogen cycle covers in detail.

The right time
Several catfish will not feed under active lighting. Feed them after the light unit has been switched off.
The quantity
Feed what is consumed within a few minutes, once or twice a day. Remove any remainder in the morning.
The open box
Allow up to four months to use it up; keep it sealed between uses, in a dry place away from light.
Wood in the tank, not just in the wafer
An aquarium root gives these fish a surface to rasp throughout the day, between feeds. Add one if your tank does not already have one, as the tablet covers the meal but not how the fish spends the rest of the day. And keep an ammonium test within reach, since a tablet left to dissolve on the bottom is exactly the sort of thing that shows up in the water before you notice anything visually.
The tablet still there in the morning
An uneaten tablet does not break down within a few hours, and that is precisely what makes it a trap: it remains visible, it looks intact, and yet it continues to leach continuously. Remove it with a siphon the following morning rather than leaving it another day, especially as it often ends up wedged under décor where nobody can see it. If your ammonium level shifts for no apparent reason, a tablet of this type is almost always lurking somewhere.
One thing worth noting is the rhythm of these fish, which is quite different from that of the rest of the tank. The other inhabitants feed in the morning, at the surface, in the light, whereas these fish feed in the evening, at the bottom, in the dark. Your two feeding sessions are therefore quite separate, and trying to combine them amounts to feeding the same tank twice. Many fishkeepers who find their water cloudy without understanding why are in fact delivering a full ration in the morning and a second one in the evening, the first having already been eaten by fish that had no need of it.
🐟 Suitable inhabitants
The primary target species are ancistrus, plecos, and other grazing loricariids, whose digestive tract is built for a high-fibre plant-based diet. These fish continuously rasp wood and biofilm, and a diet too rich in protein does not suit them over time. Corydoras and loaches, which sift the substrate without rasping wood, benefit far less from 11% cellulose and do better on a predominantly meaty wafer. Check which family your bottom-dwellers belong to before ordering, as these two diets look similar in the tank but are very different nutritionally.
