Infusoria for fry larvae, phytoplankton for rearing brine shrimp nauplii

Hobby starter foods cover the first days of rearing fry. Protogen, a dried infusoria food, feeds larvae too small to swallow a brine shrimp nauplius, at a rate of 6 to 12 grains depending on their number, or as a ready culture in 24 hours. Liquizell and Mikrozell, both phytoplankton, feed brine shrimp nauplii, from day 3 for Liquizell.

Some fry are born so small that they cannot yet swallow a freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplius: this is the case with gourami, betta and many tetra larvae. During their first days, they need an even finer food, made of microscopic organisms known as infusoria, and this is what Protogen provides. The other two products are not fed to the fish: Liquizell and Mikrozell feed the brine shrimp nauplii, which you grow on so that you have larger prey as your fry develop.

🔬 Protogen, dried infusoria

Protogen is a concentrate of dried infusoria, cultured on a nutrient medium: ciliates such as paramecia, in several sizes. You can add it directly to the rearing tank after hatching, at a rate of 6 to 12 granules depending on the number of fry, then double the amount on the second day, and carry on like this until your young fish accept larger food. The other way to use it is to start a culture of live infusoria, which is more abundant and which you draw from at each feeding.

To make a culture, add 1 g of Protogen to 1 litre of water taken from your aquarium, in a shallow plastic or glass container (never metal), then place it at 18 to 25 °C under good lighting. The culture is ready in 24 hours, and the infusoria keep multiplying if you leave it to stand. Draw them off with a pipette and release them near the fry several times a day, then prepare a fresh container every 3 to 4 days so that feeding is never interrupted. An aquarium thermometer fixed in the container tells you whether the culture is staying within the right range.

Water free of chlorine and medication for the culture

Do not use freshly drawn tap water, or water from a tank that is being treated, to start a culture, as residues of chlorine or medication prevent the infusoria from developing. Take the water from a healthy, well-filtered aquarium. Also dose Protogen sparingly when you feed it directly, because uneaten grains quickly foul the water in a small fry tank.

🦐 Liquizell and Mikrozell for artemia

An artemia nauplius only grows if it is fed, and these two phytoplankton foods are given in its rearing water. Liquizell, a liquid, is used from day 3: shake the bottle, then add it drop by drop until the water takes on a slight green tint, which is about 20 drops per 5 litres, and only add more once the artemia have cleared that cloudiness. Between day 8 and day 10, Mikrozell, a very fine phytoplankton powder, takes over. It is not given again while green particles are still visible in the water, and it also suits shrimp.

Hatch the nauplii before rearing them

If you do not yet have a hatchery, the Hobby artemia hatching kit brings together the Artemia Breeder hatchery, the Artemix and a sieve to produce your own nauplii. You feed part of the harvest straight to your fry, and rear the rest in salt water, feeding it with Liquizell and then Mikrozell, so that it grows alongside them. The hatchery is stirred by a low-output aquarium air pump.

📅 Handing over from one food to the next

A brood of tiny fry is raised in three stages. In the first few days, your larvae are given Protogen infusoria, as granules or as a culture. As soon as they can swallow freshly hatched nauplii without difficulty, you move on to the more nutritious brine shrimp. Later, once your young fish have grown, brine shrimp raised for a few days on Liquizell and then Mikrozell give them prey of a suitable size. All three products keep in a cool, dry place, with the tub or bottle tightly closed.
