Arrowhead seeds, Sagittaria montevidensis
These seeds produce Sagittaria montevidensis, an arrowhead with large arrow-shaped leaves and white flowers marked with a wine-coloured blotch.
This shallow-water plant is grown under only 2.5 to 15 cm of water. Hardy in USDA zones 8 to 11, it needs shelter in cold regions.
The summary
- What you receive: a packet of Sagittaria montevidensis seeds, giant arrowhead.
- Water: only 2.5 to 15 cm above the grow medium, as this is a marginal plant, not a deep-water one.
- Seedling: you sow on a water-saturated grow medium, in the light, for germination in 10 to 11 weeks.
- Space to allow: 60 to 120 cm tall by 30 to 60 cm wide, with petioles that can exceed 75 cm.
- Hardiness: USDA zones 8 to 11, to be protected or overwintered under cover in cold regions.
- Flowering: 2.5 cm white flowers with a wine-red blotch, from summer to early autumn.
Sagittaria to sow, a shallow-water plant for 2.5 to 15 cm of water
Delta arrowhead is easy to spot from a distance, with its arrow-shaped leaves, broad and upright on long, spongy stalks. Its white flowers, 2.5 cm across, have a wine-red blotch at the base of the petals and are borne in whorls on flower stems that rise above the foliage.
💦 A few centimetres of water
Water depth decides where you plant it. An arrowhead placed on the bottom of a pond under 40 cm of water will not establish: it belongs in the marginal zone, where the bottom rises. If your pond has no shelf, a simple tub placed on submerged concrete blocks does the same job, and you can adjust the height to the centimetre.
The water level
The water depth ranges from 2.5 to 15 cm above the grow medium, no more.
Positioning
Arrowhead can be placed on a pond edge, a shallow shelf, a pond ledge, or in a large shallow tub.
The plant
It stands 60 to 120 cm tall, forming a clump 30 to 60 cm wide.
Light
Full sun or partial shade, both suit this species.
🌱 A seedling in water
Unlike most seeds, this one germinates better on a water-saturated medium, in almost airless conditions. Sow flat, on the surface, on a fine, waterlogged compost that you keep level with the water, and leave it all in the light. Emergence takes 10 to 11 weeks, with a published success rate of around half the packet.
A watertight-based tray to flood the seedling
To keep the water level with the compost during the 10 to 11 weeks of germination, sow in a germination kit with independent trays. Each tray sits on a watertight base that you fill with water, and its vented lid limits evaporation between checks. As the trays are separate, the arrowhead stays submerged without imposing the same regime on the neighbouring vegetable seedlings, which need compost that is merely moist.
In winter, the question to settle first
This species is hardy in USDA zones 8 to 11, which in France covers only the mildest areas. Depending on your region, you will therefore need to lower the pot beneath a deeper layer of water or bring it into a bright, frost-free space. The seasonal calendar reminds you to time these moves by water temperature and by the frosts in your region rather than by the name of the month.
🌊 A marginal plant for the pond
At the edge of a stocked pond, this very shallow water depth has a practical advantage: the roots sit in the nutrient-rich water while the foliage stays entirely above the water, without shading any of the surface. You will find the other marginal plants in the aquatic plants collection, and the crops that genuinely feed a tank are covered on the page about plants to grow in aquaponics. The plant also produces a great many seeds and self-seeds easily: if your pond borders a natural wetland, cut back the faded flower stems before the seed pods open.

What you need to know
- Set the water depth with concrete blocks rather than hunting for the right level. Two or three submerged blocks give a stable base and you can adjust the level to the centimetre, which matters when the useful range runs from 2.5 to 15 cm.
- Sow on a grow medium that is truly saturated. It goes against instinct after years of sowing vegetable seedlings, but this species germinates in a poorly aerated medium, and compost that is merely damp gives poorer results.
- Date the tray. With 10 to 11 weeks to germinate, a seedling judged too early is often thrown away when it was about to sprout.
- Cut back the flower stalks as soon as flowering has finished if your pond borders a natural wetland. The plant produces a lot of seed and self-sows easily.
- Decide on overwintering in September, not in November. Depending on your region, the pot will go under a deeper layer of water or be brought indoors, and both call for a little preparation.
- Enjoy the foliage held entirely out of the water. Its roots sit in the water, its leaves do not, so it dresses a bank without shading any of the pond surface.
