Pack of 5 barbed fittings 16 mm for flexible pipe
These 16 mm barbed fittings connect two flexible pipes, either in a straight line with the straight connector or at a right angle with the 90° elbow. They are sold in packs of 5 identical pieces.
These are the fittings used in the CultiMate constant-level reservoir, where they connect tubes with a 15 mm internal diameter.
The summary
- What you receive: 5 straight connectors or 5 90° elbows, depending on the pack selected.
- The tubing: flexible tubing with a 14 to 16 mm inside diameter, such as 14 x 18 mm clear tubing.
- Fitting: the tubing is pushed firmly over the barbs, with no glue or tools.
- Pressure: suited to gravity-fed lines and low-flow pumps; add a hose clamp above that.
Straight connectors and barbed elbows for repairing or extending a water circuit with flexible pipe
A split pipe, a connection that is too short, or a section pinched at a sharp angle: most minor faults in a water circuit can be fixed with a fitting. These two barbed pieces carry a series of serrated ridges on each spigot, which grip into the pipe wall and hold it in place without glue or clips. You cut, you push on, and the connection is made in a matter of seconds.
🔗 Connector or elbow
The straight connector, 58 mm long, joins two pipes end to end: it repairs a split pipe without replacing it, or extends a run that has become too short. It is moulded in acetal, a hard engineering plastic with excellent wear resistance. The 90° elbow, 44 mm per side, in polypropylene, turns the circuit at a right angle without crushing the pipe, for example when routing it over the rim of a reservoir.
Designing a custom flexible pipe circuit
These fittings come into their own in a circuit you design yourself, around a circulation pump or a top-up reservoir. With a straight connector and an elbow, you route around an obstacle without bending the pipe, which keeps its full bore. Buy a pack of each, as a circuit almost always has several corners.
Check the internal diameter of the pipe
These fittings are designed for flexible pipe with an internal diameter of 14 to 16 mm. They are not suitable for rigid 16 mm drip-irrigation tubing, where the diameter is measured externally. Measure the inside of your pipe before ordering.
To fit a stiff pipe, soak its end in hot water for 30 seconds: the plastic softens and slides over the barbs more easily. Push it in as far as the central stop of the fitting, turning it slightly as you go. On a gravity-fed connection or behind a small pump, the barbs are sufficient to hold the pipe. Behind a powerful pump or with a rigid pipe, add a hose clip over each spigot.
🐟 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, you use them on low-pressure water connections: feeding a rainwater top-up reservoir, the overflow from a small grow bed, or the return to the pond. Both materials are common plastics suitable for water contact and resistant to standard nutrient solutions. For higher-flow connections to a raised grow bed, the flood table fitting kit offers purpose-made bulkhead fittings.
🧰 A spare parts stock
These fittings are inexpensive and easily misplaced, so a pack of 5 gives you a stock ready for the next repair. They can be removed by cutting the pipe flush with the fitting, then reused once the retained piece has been pushed out. Stored away from direct sunlight, they keep for a long time. Keep some in the garden tool kit, alongside your clips and a craft knife.
