A setting-up guide written by a market gardener who has made her living from her micro-farm since 2013. Marion Sarlé tells her own story and sets out, over more than two hundred illustrated pages, what you need to know to build a project in hydroponics, bioponics or aquaponics, right through to the business model.

Présentation

Marion Sarlé and her husband Nicolas have run a hydroponic micro-farm in south-west France since 2013, and have been training professionals at their own centre since 2015. This book is the product of that decade of practice: it mixes the technical guide and the story of setting up, which makes it something of an outlier in the library.

The format is large, twenty-one by twenty-nine point seven, and all two hundred and forty pages are illustrated with diagrams, tables, drawings and practical sheets. The book covers the three soilless techniques side by side, hydroponics, bioponics and aquaponics, and deals with plant physiology as much as with water and energy management, with the varieties the authors grow, and above all with their business model, rarely set out elsewhere with this much candour.

Ce qu'on en retient

  • Hydroponics, bioponics and aquaponics suit different projects: the book compares them instead of championing just one.
  • A lasting setup is planned first around water and energy, the two items that decide long-term viability.
  • Choosing which varieties to grow is a commercial decision as much as an agronomic one.
  • The business model of a soilless micro-farm rests on diversification, including training and direct selling.
  • The story of setting up shows the early mistakes, which a purely technical manual never does.

Le verdict de la rédaction

Note du produit : 4.5 4.5/5

This is the book to read if your project is professional rather than domestic. It does not replace a manual on aquaponics alone, since soilless growing is covered as a whole and aquaponics takes up only part of the argument. But on the question that stops most would-be growers, the business model and the day-to-day running of a micro-farm, it brings field experience that no theoretical work can give. The large illustrated format makes it pleasant to consult, less so to carry around.
