GrowStream is a soilless growing system sold here in two sizes: 10 plants on two one-metre gutters and a 45 L tank, or 20 plants on four gutters and a 150 L usable reservoir. A pump circulates the nutrient solution continuously through the double-walled gutters, where it is oxygenated by contact with the air before returning to the tank.

Both models are supplied complete on the mechanical side: gutters, tank, pump, baskets, frame, fittings and cleaning brush, plus a drain kit on the 20-plant model.

Active-flow soil-free growing: two or four one-metre channels, 45 or 150 L reservoir

The GrowStream is an active-circulation soilless growing system, sold here in two sizes. A pump placed in the tank sends the nutrient solution to one-metre double-walled channels, in which the baskets sit: two channels and 10 baskets on the 10-plant model, four channels and 20 baskets on the 20. The solution trickles over the roots, a level tube keeps a shallow film of water at the bottom of each channel, and the surplus returns to the tank by gravity. The cycle repeats continuously, with no timer to set.

💦 Oxygen in the solution

GrowStream is an aero-hydroponic system: the solution trickling through the gutters picks up oxygen on the way, and your roots, hanging in the humid air of the growing chambers, benefit from both water and air. Root oxygen is the classic limiting factor in solution-based crops: it is what separates a dense white root from a brown, asphyxiated one. There is no fine misting here as in high-pressure aeroponics: the continuous circulation and the air volume of the double-walled gutters are enough. The volume of the growing chambers accommodates young plants with still-short roots just as well as large plants with bushy root masses. In practice, you can check it by eye by lifting a gutter lid: dense white roots indicate a well-oxygenated solution, while brown, slimy roots point to a solution that is too warm or a circulation that has stopped.

The pump

The Sicce Syncra Silent 1.0, 16 W, adjustable flow up to 950 L/h, 1.5 m head. Same model across both sizes, replaceable on its own.

The gutters

One-metre profiles in white double-wall plastic, about 18 x 14.7 cm including the lid. White reflects light and keeps the roots in the dark, so no algae.

The tank

A 45 L recycled plastic tank on the 10-plant model, a 170 L reservoir, of which 150 L is usable, on the 20-plant one. It is the tank that sets your autonomy.

The baskets

The 10 or 20 slotted baskets of 3 inches, or 8 cm, are filled with clay pebbles or another inert grow medium.

🔧 What version 2 changes

What you receive is version 2 of the system. The gutters are made in France, their end caps are laser-welded and fitted with 3/4-inch threaded outlets, with their flat gaskets, and the distribution tee is supplied in parts for you to assemble. The structure that carries the gutters is assembled from 30 x 30 mm square PVC tubes and T-shaped inserts, and a cleaning brush is included. This is also what makes the difference between the two sizes, since from 20 plants upwards the tank moves up to 150 L usable capacity and a drain kit is supplied. The tee supplied in separate parts deserves a note, as it lets you orient the outlets to suit the space you have, in a line along a wall or facing each other in the middle of a room, without cutting anything.

A reliable socket for the pump

Without circulation, your roots have only the thin film of water held at the bottom of the channels, and those hanging above it dry out within a few hours in hot weather. This is the fundamental difference from a passive system such as the Kratky method, where the plant has its whole reserve to draw on. Plug the pump into a reliable socket protected by an RCD, and check the flow in each channel after every intervention.

System, grow medium and nutrition in one pack

The box carries all the mechanics and all the plumbing. If you are starting from scratch, the 20-plant pack brings together the system, the grow medium and the nutrition in a single order, with nothing to hunt down separately.

🥬 Crops that suit

Your 10 or 20 sites, over 2 or 4 linear metres, are best suited to short-cycle, low-growing plants: lettuce, mesclun, spinach, basil, parsley, chives, mint and strawberries. Solanaceous crops are possible but change the picture: a tomato or pepper plant takes up the aerial space of 2 to 3 salad plants and needs staking independent of the system; you then use only one site in two. Our guide what to plant in hydroponics, season by season details the cycles. One point worth making to spare you disappointment: the system takes plants that already have roots, not bare seeds. So allow for a seedling area upstream, however simple. In practice, staggered successions make the best use of the sites: a harvested plant frees up a place that you fill straight away with a young plant held in reserve, rather than emptying and restarting everything at once.

🧪 pH, without a buffering grow medium

In a closed circuit with no buffering medium, the pH changes quickly, as your plants take up ions unevenly while evaporation concentrates the solution. The working range is 5.8 to 6.2, and a reliable means of measurement is part of the basic equipment. Our article on pH regulation applies here too, with one caveat: with no fish to look after, the correction can be bold rather than gradual. The solution is replaced entirely every 2 to 3 weeks depending on the plant load. In the 45 L tank, a correction spreads through in about twenty minutes, as the circulation constantly mixes the water; allow twice as long for the 150 L. Conductivity should be monitored alongside, since a level that falls while conductivity rises indicates that the plants are absorbing proportionally more water than nutrients, a gap that topping up with clean water corrects better than adding fertiliser. The temperature of the solution matters just as much, as dissolved oxygen becomes scarcer above 22 °C, precisely when root respiration intensifies.

🚰 Filling with water for the first time

You assemble the system dry, following the instructions, then comes a first fill with clean water: you run the pump for an hour to check that there are no leaks and that every channel flows in the same way. This is also the moment to check that they are level, and that the level tube of each one does return the surplus to the tank. You then prepare the nutrient solution and adjust the pH before installing anything. During the first week, check the tank level, the pH and the appearance of the roots every day, as these three daily readings reveal within a few days an assembly fault that a weekly check would miss.

🪣 The grow medium and the seedlings

Allow about 3 L of clay pebbles for 10 baskets of 8 cm, 6 L for 20, rinsed until the water runs clear, because clay dust is what clogs irrigation lines fastest. The 8 to 20 mm grade is suitable, and these pebbles can be reused from one crop to the next after a simple rinse. Your plants go in already rooted, whether a cutting that has taken or a shop-bought plant; a propagator or a simple seedling area will supply them. A plant in a peat plug should be rinsed before going into the basket, as the organic matter it releases would otherwise feed the biofilm in the channels. A plant started on a neoprene disc is also fine, provided the root tangle already protrudes from the bottom, otherwise the plant will not find the flow in the first few days.

📐 Layout and space

The 10-plant occupies 117 x 50 cm of floor space, and the 20-plant 112 x 97 cm, with the tank sitting beneath the head of the channels. These are laid level, the level tube on each one setting the height of the water film and returning the surplus to the tank. The floor you choose must be flat and able to withstand water, as the 150 L tank alone weighs 150 kg when full. Finally, allow access on at least one side so that you can open the lid, measure and top up, otherwise every weekly check will force you to move the whole unit. Height is also worth anticipating, as the channels rest on the tank and the foliage grows above them, which easily brings the whole unit to 1.2 m under a suspended light.

🧽 Routine maintenance

Use the brush supplied between two crops: the channels are cleaned with clean water, then rinsed thoroughly, as the white plastic does not tolerate detergents, which leave a film. The pump strainer is rinsed each time the solution is changed, and the distribution line is checked at the same time, since a channel that drains more slowly than the others points to a deposit in its fitting. Once a season, circulate diluted white vinegar if your water is hard, then rinse twice before making up a fresh nutrient solution, as limescale reduces the pump's flow well before it becomes visible on the walls. Finally, check the seals on the channel end caps, as a slight seep ends up emptying the tank faster than evaporation does. A level reading noted down each week makes this kind of leak obvious, since consumption that doubles without the plants having grown points to a leak rather than to what the plants need.
