EHEIM rapidCleaner blade scraper for aquarium glass, 48 cm
The 48 cm EHEIM rapidCleaner scraper removes stubborn algae from aquarium glass with an 8 cm blade, protected by a silicone edge so it does not nick the seals.
Its head also accepts a flat sponge, offered here as a replacement.
The summary
- Which to choose: the complete scraper, or the sponge if you already have the handle.
- Its blade: 8 cm, guarded so it does not cut the seals.
- Which panes it suits: the blade on glass, the sponge on acrylic.
- Its length: a 48 cm fibreglass handle.
A blade and sponge scraper for cleaning the glass without plunging your arm in
On aquarium glass, algae settle in two stages: first a light green film, which comes off with a wipe of a sponge, then hard spots, green or brown, which stick to the glass and resist rubbing. The EHEIM rapidCleaner deals with both using the same 48 cm handle. It takes either an 8 cm blade, which lifts off encrusted algae, or a flat sponge, which wipes light deposits from large surfaces. You can clean the full height of the glass without plunging your arm into the water.
Stubborn algae
The blade lifts stubborn spots off the glass.
Light green haze
The flat sponge wipes large surfaces.
Deep tray
The 48 cm handle reaches the bottom of the glass.
Acrylic aquarium
Use the sponge side only, never the blade.
🪒 A blade that spares the seals
The precision-ground blade glides flat over the glass and lifts algae across its full 8 cm width, which reduces the number of passes. An integrated silicone guard on its sides prevents it from nicking the seal that joins the panes, a sensitive point on any glued aquarium. The handle is a fibreglass bar, unbreakable, that transmits pressure without bending. The blade can be changed without tools when it becomes blunt, and a replacement blade is available from EHEIM under reference 3591004.
Stop the blade before the sand
A grain of sand caught under the blade scratches the glass along the whole length of the pass, and the scratch can never be removed. So stop each stroke a few centimetres from the substrate, then finish the bottom of the pane with the sponge. On an acrylic aquarium, never use the blade: only the sponge is suitable for this softer material.
Lay the blade flat against the glass, tilting the handle slightly, then make long strokes from the bottom upwards. The loosened algae float for a moment before being drawn into the filter or settling back on the substrate, where they will be removed at the next siphoning. If stubborn spots return within a few days on glass you have just cleaned, the cause is often too much light or too many nutrients in the water, and scraping alone will not be enough to keep them at bay.
Test for phosphates when algae return quickly
Phosphates feed algae as much as plants, and a pane that gets covered within a few days often signals an excess. The JBL phosphate test in drops, in the Sensitive version, reads from 0.05 mg/L and tells you whether the water is supplying too much. You then know whether to cut back on feeding, change more water or review the lighting, instead of scraping the glass ever more often.
The rapidCleaner head takes other EHEIM accessories: an algae brush for decorations, a 90-degree corner sponge for the corners and nets in several sizes. A single handle can thus serve for all the routine maintenance of your tank, simply by changing the head according to the task. The rapidCleaner is also available in 25 cm for small aquariums and in 58 cm for deep tanks; the 48 cm version reaches the bottom of most common aquariums without your hand touching the water. Store it hanging, head downwards, so that it dries completely between uses.
🧽 The flat replacement sponge
The sponge fits in place of the blade, on the same head, in a few seconds. It removes the algae film and dirt from large surfaces, and it is suitable for acrylic aquariums, which the metal blade would scratch. As it is sold on its own, it is intended for those who already own the rapidCleaner handle, whether in 25, 48 or 58 cm. A sponge wears out over time and eventually traps grains of sand in its pores: replace it as soon as it hardens or tears, so as not to damage your glass. Between uses, rinse it in clean water and leave it to dry.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, the water permanently contains nitrates and phosphates, which feed the plants but also the algae. The glass of a fish tank therefore gets covered faster than that of an ornamental aquarium, especially in daylight. A clean pane lets you watch your fish every day and spot unusual behaviour early, and removing the algae also reduces the material that would otherwise decompose in the water. The article on pond algae in summer details the checks to carry out before taking action, and the one on green pond water explains what distinguishes suspended algae from attached algae.
