Large-volume planters for crops that the towers cannot support
The vertical towers in the MyFarm kit are excellent for leafy vegetables and herbs. A tomato, a courgette, or an aubergine needs something different: a root volume that the diameter of a column simply cannot provide. These beds are built for exactly that, and they connect directly to the water circuit you already have.
🍅 What needs volume
The nutrient-rich water from your pond circulates through these growing troughs, using either a flood-and-drain or drip-to-waste system depending on the chosen configuration. The plants suited to this setup are fruiting crops that carry weight: tomatoes of all varieties, aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, cucumbers, gherkins, melons, as well as large cabbages, cauliflowers, broccoli and headed cabbages. Root vegetables, on the other hand, are not suited to any growing support of this type, and a deeper trough will not change that.

It sits on the pond frame or its support, above the water.
Its compatibility
This version suits any greenhouse width and length, as it takes up no aisle space.
The 12-tray version
It is fitted along the walls using the lateral supports provided.
Its limitation
This version requires a greenhouse at least 220 cm wide and 290 cm long.
The two versions are not cumulative: you choose one or the other, depending on the actual space available. If your greenhouse is narrow or your pathways are already tight, the 3-trough version is the only one that fits, and it makes use of space that was otherwise wasted, the area directly above the pond. If your greenhouse meets the required dimensions, the 12-trough version changes scale entirely and runs the full length of the structure, at the cost of slightly reduced clearance along the walls.
Measure carefully, and watch for cast shadow
Check your greenhouse dimensions before choosing: the 12-tank version requires a minimum of 220 cm in width and 290 cm in length. Position the tallest plants on the north side; otherwise they will shade your towers and you will gain fruit while losing salad crops. Bear in mind that the pond volume stays the same: fruiting crops are heavy feeders, so increase the fish stocking rate gradually rather than all at once.
The grow medium and the support stakes, to order alongside
Each trough is filled with expanded clay pebbles: allow around 30 L for the 3-trough version and 120 L for the 12-trough version. Also think about horticultural twine, these plants are grown vertically and growth is rapid in aquaponics, so it is worth setting up your supports before they are needed rather than scrambling in June.
🌿 Training a fruiting plant
Two practices make a real difference with these crops. The first is to train vertically, tying strings to the top of the greenhouse to guide the stems upward. The second is to remove side shoots, so the plant puts its energy into fruit rather than foliage. Position the tallest plants, tomatoes and cucumbers, on the north side of the greenhouse. Keep a close eye on flowering too, as a closed greenhouse lets in very few insects, and giving the stems a gentle shake when they are in full flower is enough to ensure tomatoes set fruit.
🔁 Two rhythms in the greenhouse
These troughs do not replace your towers, they complement them. Keep the columns for fast-growing, frequently harvested crops: lettuces, herbs and leafy vegetables, and reserve the troughs for plants that fruit over several months. You then have two growing rhythms in the same greenhouse: a rapid rotation at height, and established plants in the ground for the season. Between seasons, the troughs are emptied, rinsed with clean water and started again with the same grow medium, as clay pebbles can be reused without difficulty after a thorough rinse.
