Siphon bell that removes silt from the gravel during a water change

Between the grains of a tank grow medium, a fine dark matter accumulates, made up of leftover food and waste. This bell goes after it: water rises up through the tube carrying the lighter particles with it, while the heavier gravel falls back into the bell. You come away with dirty water and a clean grow medium.

🌀 The water change process

A water change is when this tool really comes into its own, since a partial change removes a volume you are going to replace anyway, you may as well draw it out laden with waste. Start the siphon, place the bell flat on the substrate, let the gravel tumble for a few seconds, then move on to the next area. Work in sections, covering one zone per water change rather than going over everything at once, as the material in the substrate harbours a portion of your bacterial population and removing it all in one go will cost you in nitrites a few days later. Over fine sand, hold the bell a little higher so the sand does not get drawn up into the tube.

This model is suited to shallow grow beds and hard-to-reach areas where a long bell siphon gets in the way.

30 cm

This length covers most aquarium tanks, with a water depth of between 40 and 50 cm.

48 cm

📏 Choosing the length

The length to choose depends on the water depth of your tank, not its volume. Measure the distance from the bottom to the surface, then select the siphon bell that lets you work without submerging your wrist. One that is too short will have you wetting your forearm every time, while one that is too long becomes difficult to manoeuvre in a narrow tank. None of the three models requires electricity, which is what makes them usable anywhere, including in the fish tank of an aquaponic system where matter always ends up accumulating at the bottom.

The glove for the glass, the test for the routine

The bell removes what has settled, not what has stuck. For the glass panels, corners and décor, use the metal-fibre cleaning glove, which covers exactly the other half of a maintenance session. And if you want to know whether your water change schedule is right, a nitrate test gives a clearer answer than a gut feeling, it is this value that rises when intervals stretch too long.

Don't clean everything on the same day

Siphoning the entire substrate in one session removes a large proportion of the bacterial population responsible for processing nitrogen, and the tank will make that known 2 to 3 days later with a spike in nitrites. Work in sections instead, tackling a different area each time, and leave several weeks between two passes over the same zone. Also avoid siphoning the substrate during the same week as a filter clean, as both actions disturb the two main bacterial reserves in your system.

🧽 After the session

Maintaining the tool itself simply requires rinsing with clean water, pipe included, followed by thorough drying before storage. A pipe left damp and rolled up tightly will develop an internal film that smells unpleasant and eventually releases particles on first use. Store it uncoiled or in a large loop rather than wound into a tight ball, as a sharp kink becomes permanent and interferes with priming. Finally, keep this syphon dedicated to a single tank if you have several, or rinse it thoroughly between uses, as a syphon is one of the most effective ways of transferring disease from one aquarium to another.
