Growing medium 50 L, natural coconut fibre or with perlite

Coco coir is a by-product of the coconut industry that has, over the past thirty years, become the main alternative to peat in soilless growing. It retains water like a sponge whilst still allowing air to pass through, it breaks down slowly, and it requires no draining of a peatland to produce, which is precisely the argument that won over much of the industry.

💧 Water and air in the pot

A root needs water and oxygen at the same time, and that is precisely what coco fibre delivers. Its fibres retain available water for hours while still leaving air channels between them. You can water coco that has dried out without it repelling water, unlike dried peat, and you add nutrition through the irrigation water, which gives you full control over what the plant receives at every stage of growth.

The fibre behaves like a sponge. It keeps water available for a long time and forgives a missed watering.

Aeration

The fibre allows air through as long as it is not compacted. A compressed grow medium loses this advantage.

Nutrition

You add the fertiliser to the irrigation water and adjust the formula to suit the plant's growth stage.

Reuse

The fibre can be reused over three growing cycles. Between uses, a thorough rinse restores it to its original condition.

Perlite is an expanded volcanic rock, in the form of white, porous, incompressible beads. Mixed in at a quarter ratio, it prevents the fibre from compacting and maintains air pockets even when the grow medium is saturated. The mix can then handle frequent or slightly generous watering, whereas natural fibre alone will eventually become waterlogged. Choose the natural fibre if you water by hand and infrequently, and the perlite version if your watering is frequent or automated.

Compacting, watering, rinsing

Do not compact the grow medium when filling the pot, as the fibre will lose its air channels and roots will suffocate. Pour and level without pressing down. Do not water with plain water either, since the grow medium contains no nutrients and the plant receives only what you add, from the very first watering. Finally, rinse thoroughly between crops to flush out the salts left behind by the nutrient solution and restore the grow medium to its original conductivity.

One bag for around fifteen pots

Add a complete fertiliser and something to contain the grow medium, pots or growing baskets. A 50 L bag fills around fifteen 3 L pots. Don't forget a pH test either, since all nutrition is delivered through the irrigation water and its value determines what the plant actually takes up.

Pot growing is the primary use, with complete nutrition delivered at every watering. On a flood-and-drain table, the natural fibre retains water for several hours, allowing flood cycles to be spaced further apart. ♻️ Reusing the fibre

A coir grow medium lasts around three growing cycles, and that reuse needs to be planned for. At the end of a healthy crop, remove the root ball and any large debris, then rinse thoroughly with clean water until the conductivity of the run-off matches that of the incoming water. This rinse flushes out accumulated salts, which are the real limiting factor in reuse, well before the structure of the medium itself. After a root disease outbreak, however, the fibre goes to the compost rather than the next pot: a fibrous grow medium retains spores far more readily than a mineral one. Finally, add a proportion of fresh perlite at each reuse, as the fibre gradually loses some of its volume and porosity with each cycle.

Pure coco or coco with perlite: which should you choose?

Both bags contain the same coco fibre. Perlite replaces a quarter of the volume, and that changes just one thing: how quickly water drains through.

Which fertiliser should you use with coco fibre?

Choose a fertiliser formulated for coco. This grow medium exchanges elements with the nutrient solution: it retains some and releases others. A formula designed for coco fibre is dosed accordingly, whereas a fertiliser intended for soil becomes unbalanced within a few waterings.

The sign of a poor choice is a deficiency in young leaves even though your solution contains what they need.

What exactly does perlite change?

Perlite is an expanded volcanic rock, inert and full of air pockets. It contributes neither nutrients nor water retention: it takes up volume and keeps air within it.

In practice, a quarter perlite mix allows water to drain faster and air to return sooner after each watering. This is a clear advantage in a deep pot, where pure coco can compact and retain a saturated zone at the bottom, and in any system where water returns frequently. It is a drawback if you water by hand once a day in the height of summer: the grow medium will be dry before you get back.
