An olla waters a disc of soil around it, and that is the first thing to understand before buying even one, since the right number follows from the area to be covered rather than from the size of the jar. This model is available in 15, 30, and 50 cl, in a grey finish.

📐 How many ollas per bed

The calculation is straightforward and requires only one figure. Each jar moistens a radius of 20 to 40 cm around it, giving a zone of 40 to 80 cm in diameter. To achieve a continuous moist band, space two jars no more than 40 to 80 cm apart, depending on how much your soil spreads the water. A 2 m bed will therefore need three to five. Use the closer spacing in sandy soil, which lets water drain straight down, and the wider spacing in clay soil, which spreads it laterally.

In a staggered pattern

On two rows, offset the pots from one row to the next so that the zones overlap more effectively.

Between the plants

Allow one jar for every two to four neighbouring plants, rather than one jar per plant.

Away from the roots

Dig roughly twenty centimetres away from the base, never through the root ball.

Push a stake in near each opening, and you will find them again under the August foliage.

🌿 The plants that benefit

The benefit is clear for species that handle irregular watering poorly, tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, aubergines and strawberries, where soil that swings between dry and waterlogged causes fruit to split or flowers to drop. It's equally worthwhile for newly planted shrubs, which need consistent moisture while they establish their root systems. It's considerably less useful for Mediterranean herbs, thyme, rosemary and lavender, which positively prefer to dry out between waterings. On a mixed bed, keep the ollas to the thirstier side and leave the other well alone.

They are sold by quantity, not individually

Measure the length of your planters before ordering, and bear in mind that a single jar covers at most 80 cm. To water individual scattered pots rather than a planter, a pack of small clay spikes can be distributed one per pot. And for a balcony made up entirely of pots, a solar drip system covers 15 points at once, something no reasonable number of jars could achieve.

The first fill is not enough

A pot sunk into dry soil takes several days to reach equilibrium with the ground, and empties very quickly in the meantime. Water the bed normally when installing it, fill the pot, and expect to top it up again the very next day during the first week. The rhythm then stabilises, and it is the pattern from the second week that you should use to plan your visits, not that of the first day.

🍂 An olla's season

It goes in before planting, when you are laying out the bed. Digging between established plants means cutting roots, which is precisely what you were trying to avoid. It then does its job throughout the growing season, needing nothing more than the occasional refill. Then, before the first frosts, it comes out, gets rinsed, dries completely, and goes into storage. A jar left in the ground all winter is a jar you will find cracked in spring, and that is the only common way to lose this item.

🎨 Grey or raw

Both finishes share the same principle and are fitted in the same way; the difference lies in the appearance above the soil. The grey blends into a contemporary setting, on a terrace or in a bed mulched with slate chippings, while the natural finish model retains the orange tone of traditional terracotta. One point applies to all porous ollas on the market: a truly waterproof glaze or varnish seals the pores and stops diffusion altogether. A surface finish is therefore only useful if it allows the wall to breathe, which is the case here.
