Omy solar dryer for fruit, vegetables and herbs, 35 to 55 °C
The Omy solar dryer dehydrates fruit, vegetables, mushrooms and aromatic herbs at 35 to 55 °C, thanks to a reflector and a fan powered by a small solar panel. Supplied with 3 trays, it accepts up to 7 and is assembled from a kit.
The summary
- The principle: a black plate heats the air, which rises through the trays, and a solar fan removes the moisture.
- The temperature: 35 °C for herbs, 45 °C for fruit and vegetables, 55 °C at most.
- The trays: 3 trays supplied, up to 7 stacked.
- Drying times: from 3 hours for leaves to more than 18 hours for tomatoes.
Preserve your surplus vegetable garden produce by drying it in the sun, without electricity
The Omy solar dryer lets you preserve your garden surplus without electricity, dehydrating fruit, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs between 35 and 55 °C. A black plate heats the air, which a fan powered by a small solar panel expels laden with moisture. It comes with 3 trays and accepts up to 7.
Abundant harvests generally arrive with the sun, and the Omy dryer makes use of it so that you can preserve surplus produce without electricity. It dehydrates fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, and aromatic and medicinal plants, which then keep for months in a jar, away from the light. Removing the water from food stops the growth of mould and bacteria, which need moisture to multiply. Dried tomatoes, courgettes and herbs can then be used again in the kitchen, for example in the summer vegetable garden recipes.
Drying relies on two combined actions. The sun's rays, direct or reflected by the mirror, strike a black absorber plate that converts them into heat, and the Plexiglas pane keeps that heat trapped. The hot air then rises naturally through the trays and leaves through the roof, while a fan powered by a photovoltaic panel reinforces this current and carries away the moisture released by the food.
The closed cabinet also protects the food from insects, dust and direct UV, which dull the colours and degrade some of the vitamins when drying in the open air.
🌡️ The right temperature
The ideal is around 35 °C for aromatic and medicinal plants, whose aromas and active compounds you want to preserve, and around 45 °C for fruit and vegetables. The thermometer at the top of the collector shows the temperature near the first tray, and the tilt of the reflector, adjustable with clamping handles, adjusts the heat input according to the season and the time of day.
Drying becomes continuous throughout the season: you remove the trays that are ready and slide in new ones, loaded that same morning. For drying spread over 2 or 3 days, the dryer is brought indoors closed in the evening, with the ventilation plugged into a socket or an external battery via its USB cable, so that the food does not take the night's humidity back up.
Do not exceed 55 °C
Above this, the food cooks instead of drying and loses some of its vitamins. If the thermometer goes above this threshold, switch the fan to a higher speed, which lowers it by about 10 °C, or cover part of the water surface with a cloth.
🍅 Preparing and loading the drying trays
Choosing
Firm, healthy fruit: an overripe, sweeter fruit dries slowly and goes mouldy more easily.
Slice
From 1 to 3 mm for crunchy chips, from 3 to 5 mm for soft slices.
Arrange
Put the foods that take longest to dry on the bottom, then rotate the trays during the day.
Keeping a drying log
The time depends on the food, the thickness of the cut, the amount of sunshine and the number of trays. The table provided gives good starting points, but noting your own times, food by food, remains the surest way to improve from one harvest to the next.
🌱 In aquaponics
An aquaponic grow bed produces a lot in a short time: basil, mint, cherry tomatoes or chillies often all arrive together. The dehydrator turns this harvest peak into a store. A concrete example: 3 kg of tomatoes, which contain around 94% water, yield just over 200 g of dried tomatoes once brought down to 15% moisture, enough for a storage jar for the winter. The guide Can you achieve food self-sufficiency with aquaponics? shows how these harvests fit into family food production.
Herbs from the beds, such as basil, mint or thyme, dry at 35 °C in 3 to 6 hours and keep their aroma all year round. Food is dry enough when a few pieces sealed in a bag for a day leave no condensation on the inside wall.
📦 In the parcel
Omy comes as a kit and is assembled with a Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill: allow 1 hour for an experienced DIYer, 2 to 3 hours for a beginner. The package contains the untreated okoume and poplar cabinet with its absorber plate and glass pane, the reflector mirror, the fan and its solar panel, a thermometer, 3 trays fitted with food-grade stainless steel racks, a fine mesh for small pieces and 30 wooden skewers for hanging the slices. The wood should be protected with a natural oil before first use, and the dryer should then be stored in a dry place between seasons.
