Söchting replacement solution and catalysts for the Oxydator
This stabilised hydrogen peroxide solution feeds your Oxydator oxygenator: the 82.5 ml bottle at 4.9% fills the Mini, the litre at 3% is for the D and the litre at 6% is for the A, or for the D in a heavily stocked tank.
Ceramic replacement catalysts are available for the Oxydator W, A and D, and for the Mini.
The summary
- What it is: a stabilised hydrogen peroxide, and the ceramic catalysts that break it down into water and dissolved oxygen.
- Which bottle: 4.9% for the Mini, 3% for the D, 6% for the A or for a D on a heavily stocked tank.
- How long it lasts: one litre makes about 8 refills of an Oxydator D, which is several months.
- How to handle it: wearing gloves and goggles, with the bottle recapped and stored upright.
Replacement solution and catalysts for Oxydator, at the strength specified for each model
An Oxydator oxygenator uses no electricity, but it does use up this solution. It is hydrogen peroxide, stabilised so that it breaks down steadily on contact with the ceramic catalyst inside the unit. Each drop that leaves the reservoir becomes water and oxygen dissolved in your tank, with no other residue.
🧪 Three concentrations, three models
The more concentrated the solution, the more oxygen the unit releases each day, and the faster the refill is used up. The small 82.5 ml bottle at 4.9% matches the Mini's reservoir, which it fills in one go. The 3% litre is for the Oxydator D in an ordinary aquarium, while the 6% litre suits the Oxydator A, which covers up to 400 litres, as well as a D placed in a tank of around 100 litres or one that is heavily stocked. A litre at 3% releases roughly 15 g of oxygen in total, and a litre at 6% releases about twice that.
A thermometer to anticipate the next recharge
The rate of decomposition roughly doubles with every 8 °C, so the water temperature decides how long each refill lasts. A suction-cup aquarium thermometer stuck to the glass lets you read this value at a glance. That way you can plan the top-up when the water warms in summer, instead of finding an empty reservoir on a hot day.
A solution that stings the eyes
The label carries the Danger signal word and the H318 statement: the solution causes serious eye damage if splashed. Wear gloves and goggles when filling the unit, and recap the bottle straight away. In case of contact with an eye, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes, remove contact lenses if possible, then call a poison centre or a doctor immediately.
The level can be read through the glass reservoir of the oxygenator, and you refill when it is almost empty. The reservoir of an Oxydator D holds about 125 ml, so one litre represents roughly 8 refills. At 2 to 4 weeks per refill at 25 °C, that litre lasts several months, and even longer in cool water.
🐟 A reserve for aquaponics
In an aquaponics system, the oxygenator serves mainly as a backup during a power cut, and it is only useful if it is full on that day. So keep a spare bottle next to the tank to refill as soon as the level drops. A 6% solution in an Oxydator D delivers more oxygen per hour, which suits the fish tank of a small system, where the biomass consumes more than an ornamental aquarium. The guide to maintaining your aquaponic system in summer brings together the precautions to take when the water warms up.
🪨 Replacement catalysts
The catalyst is the porous ceramic part that breaks down the solution in your unit, and the model used in the Oxydator W, A and D has a different reference from the one used in the Mini. In the Oxydator A, the number of catalysts fitted sets the output: in a 100 to 200-litre tank with the 6 % solution, a single catalyst releases about 270 mg of oxygen per day and a refill lasts around forty days, whereas two catalysts double this supply and halve the duration. With a spare catalyst, you can switch from one setting to the other depending on the load in your tank.
🧴 Storing the bottle
The solution should be stored in its original bottle, tightly closed, upright, in a cool place away from light and out of the reach of children. No foreign matter should get into it, neither tap water, nor dust, nor the remains of an earlier filling, as this would destabilise the solution. If you ever dilute a stronger solution, do so only with distilled water. The bottle carries a use-by date, so keep in reserve the quantity needed for one season rather than a stock that will last several years.
