This green clay powder, rich in calcium, magnesium and iron, can be applied at the base of plants, added to a nutrient solution, or used as a foliar spray.
It is approved for use in organic growing, and one litre treats approximately 1,500 litres of solution.
The summary
- What you receive: a pot of green clay powder containing 13.46% calcium oxide, 2.95% magnesium oxide and 2.4% iron.
- Three ways to apply it: at the base of plants, in the nutrient solution after maceration, or as a foliar spray.
- The dose: approximately 4 g per plant, or 4 g per 10 litres of solution.
- For organic growing: suitable under European regulations, and not classified as hazardous.
Powdered mineral clay for soil, hydroponics and foliar application, suitable for organic growing
This Silicate is a green mineral powder derived from a natural clay rich in silicates, applied at the base of plants, in a nutrient solution or as a foliar spray. It provides calcium, magnesium and iron, and its alkaline nature helps stabilise the pH of the medium it is applied to. Classified as a basic mineral amendment and approved for use in organic growing, it works equally well in soil, hydroponics, coco coir or indoor cultivation.
At the base of the plants
One teaspoon, roughly 4 g, is sprinkled around the collar of each plant, on the surface of the grow medium.
In the solution
The powder steeps for 24 hours in water agitated by a pump, then only the filtered liquid is added to the reservoir.
On the foliage
Dry dusting requires 10 to 50 g per square metre, and spraying requires 4 g per 10 litres of water.
🪨 A clay rich in minerals
The powder comes from fuller's earth, a natural clay whose silicate layers retain a wide range of minerals. Its analysis guarantees 13.46% calcium oxide, 2.95% magnesium oxide, 2.4% iron and 0.4% sulphur, with a pH of 7.7. Its neutralising value reaches 17 in lime equivalent: 100 kg of product corrects soil acidity as effectively as 17 kg of calcium oxide would. Ground finely enough to pass entirely through a 1 mm sieve, it spreads evenly and can be measured by the spoonful without a precision balance.
🥄 Dosages and techniques
At the base of a potted plant, use one teaspoon, roughly 4 g, spread over about ten centimetres around the stem. In a nutrient solution, the dose is 4 g per 10 litres, which equates to 20 g for a 50-litre reservoir. For foliar application, choose between a dry dusting of 10 to 50 g per square metre and a spray at 4 g per 10 litres of water, stopping 2 weeks after flowering begins. At this rate, a one-litre pot treats around 1,500 litres of solution, several seasons' worth for a small indoor garden.
Sprinkle over the compost at repotting
When repotting into peat-free lightweight compost, dust a thin layer of Silicate over the surface. The powder absorbs excess moisture at the top of the pot, which limits the establishment of mosses and algae. This keeps the surface clean on houseplants that are watered frequently, and the powder also provides calcium and magnesium as a bonus.
With micro-organisms, at the collar or on the leaves
If you are introducing beneficial micro-organisms such as TrikoLogic or StreptoLogic into the grow medium, do not incorporate the Silicate into the solution or the grow medium during this period. Instead, apply it as a foliar spray or as a dry powder around the base of the stem while the populations become established. When dusting, work in a sheltered spot away from the wind to avoid inhaling the powder.
🌱 In soil and compost
Whether used in open ground or in pots, Silicate acts as a soil amendment: it lightens heavy, clay-based soils, making them easier to work, and it encourages the activity of the micro-organisms that maintain soil fertility. Apply it at planting time and then at the base of crops during the growing season. It also works as a poultice, diluted at 4 g per litre of water, on pruning wounds: after cutting the roots of a bonsai, or on a cutting before it goes into the ground.
💧 In nutrient solution
In hydroponics, the powder should not be poured directly into the reservoir. Mix it with water in a container fitted with a small pump, leave it running for 24 hours, then allow it to settle so the liquid separates from the sediment. Only this filtrate goes into your reservoir, at a rate of 4 g of powder per 10 litres of solution, and the paste left at the bottom can then be spread over the grow medium or around the base of plants. With osmosis or very soft water, this filtrate also helps to buffer the pH of the solution. As the product is alkaline, check the pH of the solution after adding the filtrate using a liquid pH test kit, then adjust it if necessary before resuming watering.
