This pocket scale weighs up to 500 g in 0.1 g steps, or up to 100 g in 0.01 g steps in its precision version, on a stainless steel platform protected by a fold-down cover. The first is enough for the fish ration, the second doses a chelate or a trace element for a few litres.

The summary

  • What it weighs: up to 500 g to the nearest tenth of a gram, or 100 g to the nearest hundredth, depending on the version.
  • What it is for: weighing the fish ration, a powdered fertiliser or a batch of seeds.
  • In aquaponics: 1 to 2% of the fish's weight per day, and 40 to 50 g of feed per m² of salad crops.
  • Which version to choose: the hundredth-of-a-gram one for doses below a gram, such as trace elements.

Weighs to 0.1 g up to 500 g or to 0.01 g up to 100 g, for feed rations and fertilisers

The Pure Scale Ali series II pocket scale weighs up to 500 g to a tenth of a gram, or up to 100 g to a hundredth of a gram in its precision version. Its fold-down lid protects the stainless steel platform. The 500 g version weighs the fish ration and salts, while the 100 g version measures out chelates and trace elements.

Most weighings in an aquaponic or hydroponic system fall between a few grams and a few hundred grams: a feed ration, a dose of Epsom salt, a bag of seeds to share. The Ali scale from Pure Scale covers this range, up to 500 g to the tenth of a gram, in a pocket-sized case that stores away with your bottles and water tests. Its precision version goes down to 0.01 g, up to 100 g, for the finest doses.

⚖️ Two levels of precision, one housing

The stainless steel pan takes the load directly, or a cup. The tare function cancels out the weight of the container, and the backlit screen then shows only what you pour in. The fold-down lid protects the pan and the screen between uses, which matters in a damp room where powders and splashes are common. The scale switches itself off after a period without weighing, to save its two AAA batteries, and it displays grams, ounces or carats as you choose.

Fish feed

The 500 g version weighs the daily ration in a tared cup.

Powdered fertiliser

Epsom salt and bicarbonate are dosed to a tenth of a gram, with no rounding.

Trace elements

The hundredth-gram version doses an iron chelate for a bucket of a few litres.

🐟 A weighed ration every day

In aquaponics, the daily ration is calculated as a percentage of the weight of the fish. The FAO guide to small-scale aquaponics recommends 1 to 2% per day for fish over 50 g in the growing-on phase, and 1% beyond 100 g. To find this weight, you weigh a small sample, calculate the average weight, then multiply by the number of fish in the tank. A ration weighed out like this each day limits uneaten feed, which decomposes at the bottom of the tank and loads the water, and both the trout feed and the pellets for pond fish are weighed directly in a tared cup.

Tenth or hundredth, depending on the dose

With a resolution of 0.1 g, the 500 g version rounds a 0.25 g dose to 0.2 or 0.3 g. For an iron chelate or a trace element meant for a few litres, choose the version that reads to 0.01 g, or use a stock solution.

Weighing a few fry in a bowl of water

Place a bowl of water from the tank on the 500 g version, tare it, then add a few fry with a small net. The fish stay in their water, the measurement takes a few seconds, and you get the average weight by dividing the total by the number of fish weighed. The bowl, water and fish must stay under 500 g, which suits fry and young fish.

📏 Balancing fish and plants

The amount of feed given each day is also used to size the crops. The FAO recommends a feeding rate ratio of 40 to 50 g of feed per day per square metre for leafy vegetables, and 50 to 80 g for fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes. A 2 m² grow bed planted with lettuce therefore calls for 80 to 100 g of feed per day, which is the ration for about 10 kg of fish, corresponding to a 500 L tank in the tables of the same guide. Weigh this ration each morning, and you will know whether your fish stock really feeds the area under cultivation.

The weight of the fish changes over the weeks, and the ration with it. A sample weighing every fortnight, noted in a notebook together with the water temperature, shows you the real growth of the stock and lets you adjust the ration before the plants run short of nutrients or the water becomes overloaded. When the water cools, the fish eat less: the weighed ration goes down, and any leftovers at the bottom of the tank tell you that it needs reducing further.

🧪 Dosing a supplement to the hundredth

The mineral supplements for a small system are dosed in fractions of a gram. DTPA chelated iron is dosed at 18 g per 1,000 L when aiming for 2 mg of iron per litre: for a 20 L sump tank, that comes to 0.36 g, an amount that only the 0.01 g version can weigh without rounding. Weigh the powder on a tared piece of paper, dissolve it in a glass of water from the system, then pour the solution slowly into the sump tank. For larger additions, such as Epsom salt or potassium bicarbonate, the tenth of a gram of the 500 g version is enough. The hundredth is a matter of readability, not guaranteed accuracy to the hundredth: on 0.36 g, an error of 0.02 g represents more than 5% of the dose, which is still far finer than the whole-gram rounding of a kitchen scale.

A pocket scale gives reliable results provided a few conditions are met. Place it on a flat, stable surface, away from draughts and the vibrations of a pump, then wait for the display to settle before reading the value. Check it from time to time: placed alone on the platform, the 100 g calibration weight should display its stated value, on the 500 g version as on the 100 g version. If the discrepancy grows from one check to the next, recalibrate with the mass specified in the instructions, and do so again after a knock or after transport. Stored with the lid closed, away from the humidity of the room, it will keep its accuracy from one season to the next.
