EHEIM pHcontrol+e WiFi pH controller with CO2 regulation
The EHEIM pHcontrol+e measures the aquarium's pH continuously and opens or closes the CO2 solenoid valve to hold it at the chosen value. It is set up over WiFi, from the EHEIM Digital app or a browser.
Available as a complete set, as a controller on its own or as a replacement probe.
The summary
- Which model: the complete set, the controller on its own or the probe.
- What it regulates: pH from 6 to 9, by controlling the CO2.
- How to set it up: over WiFi, using the EHEIM Digital app or a browser.
- The probe: calibrate it at pH 7 and keep it moist at all times.
A stable pH day and night, adjusted from your phone
The EHEIM pHcontrol+e is a WiFi pH controller that keeps the aquarium pH between 6 and 9 by operating the CO2 solenoid valve, so the gas is only injected when needed. Its probe measures from 0 to 14 with a tolerance of ± 0.25, and it is set up using the EHEIM Digital app or a web browser.
In a planted aquarium, injected CO2 feeds the plants, but it also acidifies the water: the more you add, the lower the pH falls. Dosing by hand, using a bubble counter, amounts to aiming by guesswork, and too much CO2 hampers the fish's breathing. EHEIM's pHcontrol+e measures the pH continuously with a probe, then opens or closes the CO2 solenoid valve to hold it at the value you have chosen: the gas is injected only when the water needs it.
⚙️ How the regulation works
The probe is immersed in the tank and transmits its reading to the controller, which operates the solenoid valve. The controller regulates between pH 6 and pH 9, while the probe measures from 0 to 14 with an accuracy of ± 0.25 and a response time of under 1 minute. Before it is put into service, the device asks you for the carbonate hardness (KH) of your water, which determines the relationship between CO2 content and pH. It manages a day and night cycle, can be coordinated with the LEDcontrol+e, and alerts you if the pH drifts from the set value, whether upwards or downwards.
Everything is set up over WiFi, from the EHEIM Digital app or from a browser, on a smartphone, tablet or computer: target value, schedules, test and calibration reminders. The compact controller is mounted beside the tank; its cables measure about 2 m to the probe and 1.5 m to the solenoid valve. It runs from the mains via the supplied power adapter, which delivers 5 V, and EHEIM guarantees it for 3 years.
A probe that must never dry out
A pH probe that dries out loses its accuracy and may become unusable. Keep it in water or, when not in use, in its cap filled with storage solution, with the sealing nut in place. Rinse its tip with clean water without ever rubbing it.
🧪 Installing and calibrating
The set contains the controller and its power supply, the probe with its pH 7 calibration solution, a suction cup with its holder, the CO2 solenoid valve and a non-return valve. It connects to a pressurised CO2 system: cylinder, regulator, diffuser and pipe are not included, and the EHEIM pressurised CO2 kit brings them together if you are starting from scratch. Place the probe in an area with good water movement, away from the diffuser, so that it measures the tank water and not the plume of bubbles. Calibration is done at pH 7, ideally around 25 °C, by following the controller's wizard, which then reminds you when to repeat it.
A pH drop test to check the probe
A probe gradually loses accuracy, so the displayed reading ends up drifting from reality. The pH drop test gives you an independent reference value: a growing gap between the two signals a probe that needs calibrating or replacing. You can correct this before the controller doses CO2 based on a false reading.
Complete set
Controller, probe, solenoid valve and non-return valve.
Controller only
To replace a unit, supplied with its power adaptor.
Replacement probe
The wear part, to be replaced after 2 years at the latest.
To be added
CO2 cylinder, regulator, diffuser and pipe.
📈 An example setting
Take a planted 200-litre aquarium whose water has a KH of 6 °dH. A pH setpoint of 6.8 corresponds to a CO2 level that suits plants and is safe for fish. The controller opens the solenoid valve in the morning, lets the pH fall to 6.8, holds it there throughout the lighting period, then shuts off the CO2 at night. In the app, the curve for the day then shows a steady drop when the lights come on, followed by a plateau. The probe is a wear part: depending on use, it needs replacing after a few weeks to several months, and after 2 years at the very latest.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, pH moves in the other direction: nitrification gradually acidifies the water, and it is a drop that you need to watch for, with a target range of 6.4 to 7.5. The pHcontrol+e then serves mainly as a connected measuring device: the probe records the pH continuously and the app alerts you as soon as it leaves the range you have chosen, which gives you time to correct it. The article on regulating pH in an aquaponics system explains how to raise it without shocking the fish or the bacteria.
