Box of 10 or 20 heritage tomatoes, open-pollinated varieties, to sow under cover from February

20 packets, 20 tomatoes that look nothing alike, in a single cardboard box. You will find the green-striped Green Zebra, the elongated San Marzano of Neapolitan sauces, two beefsteak varieties, Brandywine and Cuore di Bue, a lemon-yellow Citrina, and several cherry types including Figiel Orange.

🍅 Very different varieties

The word tomato covers fruits that share neither the same size, nor the same harvest time, nor the same purpose. Cherry varieties crop early and in trusses, are eaten raw and grow well in pots. Salad tomatoes such as Green Zebra or Ensalada are sliced thickly and harvested in the height of summer. Beefsteaks come last, sometimes weighing 500 g each and needing a sturdy support, whereas the San Marzano has little juice and few seeds, making it ideal for preserving and slow-cooked sauces. A collection therefore gives you a spread harvest from July to October, where a single packet concentrates everything into 3 weeks.

Green Zebra

A green and yellow salad tomato, pleasantly sharp, harvested when the skin turns golden without ever reddening.

San Marzano

The elongated Italian preserving variety, with dense flesh and few seed cavities, reduces down without releasing water during cooking.

Beef heart

Brandywine and Cuore di Bue, large ribbed late-season fruits that need staking from planting.

Grass paper

The sachets are packaged in Germany in paper made from grass fibres, with no plastic film.

🌡️ Sow in the warm, plant out late

The tomato calendar has three stages, and heat governs the first. Sow under cover between February and April, at a depth of 1 cm, in a grow medium kept between 20 and 25 °C: germination then takes 6 to 10 days, compared with 3 weeks in a room at 16 °C. Prick out into individual pots at the two true-leaf stage, burying the stem right up to the seed leaves, as tomatoes produce roots along every buried portion of stem. Planting out must wait until the last frosts have passed and the soil reaches 15 °C, mid-May in most regions. The growing calendar breaks this down month by month.

A tomato seedling sown directly in the ground fails to germinate

This is the mistake that costs you an entire season. In February and March, the soil in a British garden barely reaches 8 °C, well below the 20 °C that seeds need to germinate. Your seedlings must therefore be started indoors, in a greenhouse or under a cold frame, and moved into the garden once they are already established. Direct sowing outdoors in the growing season remains possible in warmer regions, but your harvest will then be pushed back by 6 weeks.

The heat mat brings germination forward by 10 days

A living room sits at around 19 °C at the end of winter, which is barely sufficient. Placed beneath the seed tray, the 20 W heat mat keeps the grow medium between 20 and 25 °C and brings germination down to under a week, with more even seedlings. You can then sow as early as mid-February without prolonging the most vulnerable period, the time when the seed swells before it has actually germinated.

🔢 From 10 to 20 varieties

The number on the box refers to the varieties included, not the seeds: each packet contains one variety and its Latin name. A family kitchen garden rarely grows more than 8 tomato plants at a time, each plant taking up close to a square metre once staked. Going from 10 to 20 varieties does not double your harvest, it gives you enough to vary your selection over several seasons and to compare two cherry types or two beefsteaks side by side, in the same soil and the same year.

🫙 From one season to the next

A box of 20 varieties is not meant to be sown in a single year, and that is precisely how it is intended. Store opened packets somewhere dry and cool, away from light, an airtight container is far better than a kitchen drawer where steam finds its way in. Under these conditions, a tomato seed retains good germination viability for 4 to 5 years. Beyond that, place 10 seeds between two sheets of damp paper and count how many germinate within a week before sowing a full row. The article on germination failures covers the other causes, and our Noire de Crimée guide shows what an heirloom variety can produce when grown through to the very end.
