Three trays of 40 cells, vented dome and watertight base

The set brings together three trays of 40 cells, giving 120 germination slots, each topped with a dome fitted with adjustable vents and sitting on a watertight base. You have everything you need to start several varieties at once without taking up a large surface area.

Each tray measures 37 by 23 cm and stands only 12 cm tall including the dome, so it fits under a shelf and sits on an ordinary worktop. Each cell is sized for common seeds, deep enough to hold the grow medium stable and compact enough not to bury a small seed. The transparent PET lets you see what is happening underneath without lifting anything.

🚿 Bottom watering

The watertight base collects the water, and capillary action draws it up through the grow medium in each cell. This technique is ideal for delicate seeds: no seed is displaced by a jet of water, no young stem gets wet, and moisture distributes itself evenly throughout the full depth of the cell. It also eliminates puddles beneath the trays and unnecessary evaporation. Simply pour a small amount of water into the base, leave it to work, then drain whatever remains once the grow medium is moist.

🌾 Removing a plant without breaking it

The right moment is when the first true leaves appear, once the roots are holding the plug together but before they have begun circling the bottom of the cell. Push up from beneath so the plug comes out whole while the rootlets of neighbouring cells remain undisturbed. Allow a spacing of 5 cm at transplanting. Less damage at the transplanting stage means a cleaner establishment once your plants are in the tank or the gutter, and that is where the difference between a full run and a patchy one is decided.

A mat underneath, a light mix inside

A tray of this size sits comfortably on a 55 by 35 heat mat. Fill the cells with a light seedling compost or a mix lightened with perlite, which keeps air in the root ball. A grow medium that is too dense holds water at the base of the cell and causes roots to rot before they have filled the space.

Water poured from above

Watering from above defeats the purpose of the watertight base, as seeds shift around, crowns stay wet, and damping off sets in. The dome should be opened slightly as soon as germination occurs and not before, since the humidity that encouraged germination will otherwise encourage mould. A rinse with clean water is sufficient between batches, as detergents leave residues that interfere with subsequent seedlings.

📐 The mid-size format

This format sits between two approaches, and that is what determines the purchase. Forty cells per tray is enough for a uniform run of a single variety, something a 12-cell tray cannot provide, yet still small enough not to commit an entire shelf to one sowing date. Three trays can therefore cover three dates or three varieties, whereas the small tray multipacks offer six to ten dates but in shorter runs. The choice ultimately depends on what you are growing: a lot of one thing, or a little of many things.

🔁 Reusing the trays

PET trays hold up well over several seasons, provided they are handled with care and stored dry. Rinse the trays under clean water at the end of each batch, dry them before stacking, and store the domes separately rather than pressing them together under force, cracks almost always start at a stressed corner. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight between uses, as UV light degrades clear plastic far more quickly than normal wear ever would. A set looked after this way will easily last five or six seasons of seedlings, which brings the cost per plant down to a level that bears no comparison with disposable pots.
