JBL ProAquaTest Easy 7-in-1 water test strips, aquarium and pond
A test strip dipped for 3 seconds gives you six values for your water in one minute: chlorine, pH, KH, GH, nitrite and nitrate. The CO2 is then worked out from a chart that cross-references the pH and the KH, and the tube of 50 strips covers nearly a year of weekly checks.
The summary
- What it is: a tube of 50 test strips that measure six water parameters in a single dip.
- What they measure: chlorine, pH from 6.4 to 9, KH, GH, nitrite and nitrate, plus CO2 via a chart.
- How long it takes: 3 seconds in the water and a reading at 60 seconds, chlorine within the first few seconds.
- How to choose: the test strip for routine monitoring, the drop test or the case for a precise figure and for ammonium.
- In aquaponics: monitor nitrite during cycling, then KH and nitrate every week.
- How they arrive: in a small parcel shipped within 48 hours, to your home.
Six water parameters read in one minute, and the CO2 from a chart
The JBL ProAquaTest Easy 7 in 1 test strips are used for routine checks of the water in an aquarium, a pond or an aquaponics system. Dipped for 3 seconds, each strip gives six values in 60 seconds: chlorine, pH, KH, GH, nitrite and nitrate. CO2 is worked out from a chart. The tube of 50 strips does not measure ammonium.
These test strips give you an overview of your water in one minute, with no bottles, no test tubes and no syringe. You swish a strip in the water for 2 to 3 seconds, let the excess drain off to the side, then compare its pads with the colour chart printed on the tube. Six values can be read in a single dip, on the water of an aquarium, a pond or an aquaponics system, as well as on tap or well water before a top-up.
🧪 Six tablets and a chart
Each pad reacts to one parameter. The chlorine pad shows tap water that still carries disinfectant, which must not go as it is onto fish or onto the bacteria in the filter. The pH reads from 6.4 to 9, the KH from 0 to 20 °dKH and the GH from under 1 to over 21 °dGH, which tells you how hard your water is and its buffering capacity. Nitrite reads from 0 to 10 mg/L and nitrate from 0 to 250 mg/L: these are the last two stages of the nitrogen cycle.
The seventh parameter requires no tablet. The chart supplied cross-references the pH and KH you have just read and works out the dissolved CO2 content from them, which is useful for judging whether aquatic plants have enough carbon. As this value is derived from the other two, its accuracy depends directly on how well you read the pH and KH, and it becomes meaningless in very poorly buffered water.
Read at 60 seconds, then close the tube
The test strip keeps reacting after the one-minute reading, and its colours change markedly beyond 70 seconds. A late reading therefore gives false values, and a strip can only be used once. Read the chlorine within the first few seconds, then the other pads at 60 seconds, in daylight. Close the tube as soon as you have taken your strip, because humidity in the air damages the remaining pads despite the desiccant it contains.
📏 Test strip or drop test
A test strip gives a range rather than a precise value. Nitrite is read here on a scale that goes up to 10 mg/L, whereas a nitrite NO2 water test in drops distinguishes levels from 0.025 mg/L, well before your fish are in danger. The strip also does not measure ammonium, the first toxic compound in a newly started tank, nor phosphates. It is therefore for routine checks, when you want to know within a minute whether a parameter has strayed outside its usual zone, whereas the drop test gives the figure that decides what you do next.
Complete the test strip with the ammonium test
If you are starting up an aquarium or an aquaponics system, add the ammonium NH4 water test drops to these test strips. Ammonium is the first compound to build up until the filter bacteria are established. With both, you can follow every stage of the nitrogen cycle, from ammonium to nitrate, without waiting for a fish to show signs of distress.
🌿 In aquaponics and in the pond
During the first weeks of an aquaponics system, the nitrite level rises and then falls as the bacteria become established, before nitrate builds up to feed your plants. A test strip every day or every 2 days tracks this curve without using up your reagents. Once the system is balanced, the weekly test mainly keeps an eye on KH, because nitrification produces acid and uses up the water's buffering capacity. KH then falls slowly, before the pH drops in turn. The guide to the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics describes each of these stages.
In the pond, the test strip is mainly useful in spring and before each top-up with fresh water. A coloured chlorine pad on the tap water shows that it needs treating before you fill. GH and KH then indicate the hardness of the top-up water, and nitrate shows whether the pond is producing more nitrogen than its plants consume. Any reading that departs from the usual can then be confirmed with the 6-in-1 pond water test kit, which adds ammonium and phosphates.
The pack contains 1 tube of 50 test strips, with the colour scale printed on the label, and the CO2 reading chart. At one test per week, a tube covers nearly a year of checks, or just over 7 weeks of daily monitoring during cycling. Store it closed, in a cool, dry place, rather than on the stand of an aquarium where the air stays humid.
