Precise temperature reading through the glass, with a visual alert when out of range
A heater that fails or a day of intense heat can push the water in a tank outside its usual range without anything being visible. This thermometer sticks to the outside of the glass and measures the temperature through it, with nothing immersed in the water. Its large 1.8 cm digits show the reading to the tenth of a degree, from 0 to 37 °C. When the water drops below 18 °C or rises above 28 °C, the display flashes, so you only need to walk past the tank to see that the water has gone out of range.
🌡️ Where to place it
Choose a clean section of glass on your tank, at least 3 cm below the water level, away from the heater and the filter outlet so that you read a representative temperature. Insert a button cell battery, bought separately, observing the polarity, remove the adhesive film, then press the thermometer against the glass. The hook-and-loop strips let you remove and refit it at any time, to move it or change the battery. If the strips stop holding, clean limescale deposits off the glass before sticking it back on.
Below 18 °C
The display is flashing: first check that the heater is working.
18 to 28 °C
The display stays steady, because the water is within the range.
Above 28 °C
The display is flashing: shade the tank and increase the aeration.
Accuracy
The display shows tenths of a degree, and the reading is accurate to within 1 °C.
Act when the water drops below 18 °C
If the display flashes in winter, a thermostat aquarium heater brings the water back into range, provided its power suits the volume of your tank. Place it away from the thermometer, so that the reading reflects the whole volume, and set it according to the displayed value. Check the next day that the display has stopped flashing before adjusting the setting again.
Always out of the water
The thermometer is fitted to the outside of the glass and must never be submerged. Place it away from water outlets and diffusers, so that it does not get splashed.
🐟 Heated tank or cold water
The two alarm thresholds, 18 and 28 °C, suit a heated indoor tank, such as a tropical aquarium or an aquaponic system whose fish live in warm water. If your tank stays in cold water, however, the display will flash for much of the year, since the trout in a salmoponics system, like the fish in an unheated indoor pond, often live below 18 °C. For these tanks, a glass suction-cup thermometer gives you the temperature without a permanent alert, and you can read it to the nearest degree.
🌱 In aquaponics
Temperature governs three things in an aquaponic system: the fish's appetite, the speed of the filter bacteria and the amount of oxygen the water can hold, which falls as it warms. An alert you can read at a glance saves you from discovering too late that a heater has switched off or that the water has overheated in midsummer. The guide to looking after your aquaponic system in summer details what to do when the water heats up, shading and aeration, and the one on preparing your system for autumn links the drop in temperature to the fish's feed ration.
