The summary

  • What you receive: a Sicce submersible pump rated at 600 L/h and 6.5 W, with suction cups, filter sponge, and pipe adaptor.
  • Actual flow rate: 600 L/h when water exits at pump level, decreasing progressively as head height increases, and zero at around 80 cm.
  • Compatible systems: the original pump for the CultiMate Aero and the Ebb&Grow, and small aquaponic tanks.
  • Maintenance: rinse the impeller every 2 to 3 months, and never run the pump dry.

Small submersible pump for circulating the solution in a hydroponic system or an aquaponic tank

A submersible pump circulates the nutrient solution in a hydroponic system, whether feeding sprayers, filling a flood table, or returning water to a grow bed. This 600 L/h pump, manufactured in Italy by Sicce, is fitted as standard in the CultiMate Aero aeroponic pot and the Ebb&Grow flood table. Compact, at 57 mm long by 43 mm wide and 52 mm tall, it sits on the base of the reservoir on its suction cups, and you adjust the flow rate by hand to suit your system's requirements.

📏 Flow rate by head height

The 600 L/h flow rate is measured at zero head, meaning when the water exits at the same level as the pump. As soon as the pump pushes water upward, the flow rate drops, slowly at first then increasingly quickly, until it reaches zero at around 80 cm of head. The higher the outlet, the further the actual flow rate falls from the stated 600 L/h. Bends, a long pipe or sprinkler heads add resistance that reduces the flow further still. Before choosing a pump, measure the height between the water level in the reservoir and the highest outlet point.

This flow rate is suited to small systems. In a 45-litre aeroponic pot, the pump feeds the diffusers that keep the roots under a continuous mist, and in a flood table it fills the grow bed before the solution returns to the reservoir by gravity. It can also be used to circulate a deep water culture reservoir or to supply a small fountain. For a larger or taller system, the 1,200 to 3,400 L/h pond pump takes over.

Replacing the pump on an aeroponic pot

The CultiMate Aero aeroponic pot works with this specific pump, connected to its standpipe and its diffusers. In the event of failure or wear, it fits identically into the aeroponic pot, with no modification to the circuit. You therefore retain the flow rate for which the sprayers and diffusers were designed, and the system returns to its original operation without any further adjustment.

Never run the pump dry

The pump must only be operated submerged, as running it dry will damage the motor. The water must always cover its intake grilles, a minimum of around 2 cm, and you should monitor the reservoir level, which drops through evaporation and plant uptake. Connect it downstream of a 30 mA residual current device, with a drip loop on the cable. Water temperature must not exceed 35 °C.

Adjustable flow rate

A sliding regulator reduces the flow rate, preventing a small tank from flooding or the solution from spraying out of the emitters.

The 13 mm outlet

It accepts 12 x 16 mm flexible pipe via the supplied adapter, or a 13 mm rigid tube.

The suction cups

They hold the pump at the bottom of the reservoir and dampen vibrations, which reduces the noise transmitted to the tank.

Its synchronous motor draws 6.5 W, which works out to roughly 4.7 kWh per month in continuous operation, modest consumption for a pump running day and night in an aeroponic system. The rotor shaft is made from AISI 316 stainless steel, which resists mildly acidic nutrient solutions. A foam filter fitted in the pre-chamber catches debris before it reaches the rotor, and the 1.5 m cable ends in a two-pin European plug. You can leave it running 24 hours a day, as long as it remains submerged.

🔧 Rotor maintenance

Limescale and solution deposits will eventually slow the impeller, reducing flow rate before the pump seizes altogether. The filter foam should be rinsed as soon as the flow drops: slide out the pre-chamber located beneath the pump and rinse it under running water. Every 2 to 3 months, unplug the pump, remove the front cover and take out the impeller for a rinse under warm water, then reassemble everything in reverse order. The cable cannot be replaced, so a damaged cable means the pump must be changed. The 2-year warranty covers the pump but not the impeller, which is considered a wear part.

🐟 In aquaponics and in aquariums

Originally designed for aquarium use, this pump is equally suited to a fish-based system. In a small aquaponic setup, it draws water from the pond up to a grow bed filled with clay pebbles positioned no more than 40 cm above, half its maximum head, which leaves a comfortable margin to account for losses through the pipe and bends. The flow controller can then be adjusted so the grow bed fills without overflowing. When used with small fish, keep the filter foam in place and clean it more frequently, as waste matter will clog it quickly.

📦 In the box

The pump is supplied with its 1.5 m cable and plug, suction cups, filter foam, an adapter for 12 x 16 mm pipe, and a multilingual instruction leaflet that includes English. It runs on 220 to 240 V at 50 Hz and weighs approximately 320 g. Its manufacturer reference is PRM220, and the replacement impeller carries the reference SGR0001. To oxygenate the solution in addition to circulating it, you can add an aquarium air pump to the reservoir, as the water pump does not replace one.
