This solar-powered air pump kit oxygenates a pond, a grow bed, or a water trough with no mains connection. Its 5 W panel powers a 120 L/h pump directly, which pushes air through a pipe to a diffuser resting on the bottom.

It works without a battery: the pump runs as soon as sunlight hits the panel and stops at night.

The summary

  • What you receive: a 5 W panel on an adjustable stake, a 120 L/h pump, a pipe and a diffuser.
  • How it works: with no battery or switch, the pump runs as long as the panel receives sunlight.
  • Intended use: a small pond, a grow bed or a tank, away from any mains power supply.
  • The limitation: no aeration at night — supplement with a mains-powered pump if you have a large number of fish.

Self-contained aeration kit for a pond or tank located away from any mains socket

At the bottom of a garden, beyond a kitchen garden, or in a greenhouse with no electricity, running a cable to the pond is often the most awkward part of setting up aeration. This kit does away with that entirely. The solar panel, pushed into the lawn or clipped to the edge of the pond, powers an air pump connected by a pipe to a diffuser resting on the bottom. There is no socket to install, no electricity bill, no wiring to have checked, and you can move the whole setup in a matter of minutes if the pond is relocated.

☀️ Sunlight as the sole energy source

The 5 W photovoltaic panel produces a direct current of approximately 8 V, transmitted to the pump via a 3 m cable. The pump, a small diaphragm pump, draws in ambient air and pushes it through the pipe at a maximum flow rate of 120 L/h, or 2 litres of air per minute. At the bottom of the water, the diffuser breaks this air into fine bubbles, which stir the water as they rise and renew the surface area in contact with the atmosphere. It is this circulation, more than the bubbles themselves, that replenishes the oxygen in your water.

The kit includes neither a battery nor a switch. As soon as sunlight hits the panel, the pump starts; when a cloud passes, the flow rate drops; at nightfall, it stops. Maximum flow is achieved in full sun with the panel correctly oriented, and it varies throughout the day with the sun's height and the angle at which its rays strike the panel. In overcast conditions, the pump may run at low speed or remain stopped. There is nothing to adjust: the kit simply follows the available sunlight.

Taking over at night with a mains-powered pump

At night, plants and algae in the pond consume oxygen rather than producing it, while the solar pump is switched off. If you keep a large number of fish, a mains-powered adjustable air pump connected to a timer ensures aeration from dusk until morning. The solar kit then covers the daytime without using any electricity, and the mains pump runs only at night.

Keep the pump dry, above the waterline

The air pump must never be submerged or placed on wet grass. Position it out of the rain, on a dry support, and above the water level: when switched off each evening, water can otherwise siphon back through the pipe and into the pump. A non-return valve on the pipe eliminates this risk if the pump must remain at ground level.

The panel

5 W, approximately 8 V, in an aluminium frame, with a three-part spike and a ball joint.

The pump

A diaphragm pump rated at 120 L/h, single outlet, connected to the panel by 3 m of cable.

The pipe and the diffuser

A flexible air pipe and a diffuser stone to place at the bottom of the water.

The instructions

The assembly instructions, with the connection diagram for all four components.

Installation takes just a few minutes. You assemble the stake, secure the panel to it via its ball joint, and push the whole thing into a sunny spot no more than 3 m from the pump. Slide the pipe onto the pump outlet and onto the diffuser, then place the diffuser at the bottom of the pond, ideally in the deepest area. Finally, connect the panel cable to the pump: if the sun is out, bubbles appear straight away. A diffuser placed very deep exerts greater back-pressure on the pump, which reduces the airflow, in a pond deeper than one metre, it is better to rest it on a ledge or suspend it at mid-depth, where it will still circulate the entire water column.

🧭 Positioning the panel

A panel's output depends on the angle at which it receives sunlight. In France, you face it due south, tilted at around 30 to 45° from horizontal, which the stake's ball joint allows. Avoid shade from a tree, hedge, or wall during the middle of the day, as even partial shading on the cells causes output to drop sharply. In spring, as foliage develops, check that a spot chosen in winter remains clear, and move the stake if necessary. You can also tilt the panel more upright in winter, when the sun stays low on the horizon, and lay it flatter in summer, when it passes near its zenith at midday: adjusting twice a year is enough to recover a good portion of the output you would otherwise lose.

🌡️ When water runs low on air

Warm water contains less dissolved oxygen than cool water, while fish, being more active, consume more of it. Sunny summer afternoons combine both effects, and that is precisely when the panel produces the most. The solar pump therefore delivers its best flow rate exactly when your pond needs it most during the day. It also reduces water stagnation, which encourages mosquito larvae, and the formation of a surface film that slows gas exchange with the air. In a drinking trough or a rainwater harvesting tank, this gentle circulation is often enough to keep the water clear and odour-free throughout summer. The drop in oxygen in the early morning, however, after a night without aeration, is not covered.

🐟 In aquaponics

An aquaponic system installed in the garden is often a long way from the house. The kit aerates a floating raft grow bed, where the roots are permanently submerged, or a lightly stocked small pond. For a more heavily stocked fish pond, use it alongside a mains aeration unit, never as the sole source of oxygen, a warm night without aeration is enough to put fish in distress.

🔧 Maintenance and winterising

Wipe the panel with a damp cloth whenever dust, pollen or droppings build up on it, as a dirty panel produces less output. Every 2 to 3 months, remove the diffuser and brush it: limescale and algae block its pores and reduce airflow. Before frost sets in, bring the pump and diffuser indoors; the panel can stay outside, but store it along with the rest of the kit if the pond no longer needs aeration over winter. The kit is covered by a 2-year guarantee.
