Trim and pick up from the bottom of the tank without getting wet
The Hobby Aqua Tool, a 2-in-1 pair of scissors and tongs, lets you maintain a tank without getting wet. Its 50 cm handle, operated from outside the water, reaches the bottom of aquariums 40 to 60 cm tall and of grow beds. The scissors trim plants, and the tongs pick up debris.
In a deep aquarium, small maintenance jobs often mean plunging your arm in up to the shoulder: cutting off a dead leaf, picking up leftover food, removing a snail or putting an uprooted plant back in place. The Aqua Tool from Hobby combines scissors and tweezers on the end of a 50 cm handle. You keep your hand out of the water and work precisely right down to the bottom of the tank.
🔧 Scissors and pincers on one handle
The control is at the other end of the handle, out of the water, and the movement of your hand is transmitted all the way to the tool. The scissors cut damaged leaves and stems that stick out. The grabber picks up whatever is lying on the bottom: fallen leaves, uneaten food, small debris, or a light piece of decor that needs moving. The two tools together thus cover most routine jobs, without your having to empty part of the tank or roll up your sleeves.
Dead leaf
The scissors cut it flush with the stem.
Leftover food
The grabber removes it before it breaks down.
Uprooted plant
The tweezers put it back in place.
Deep tray
The 50 cm handle reaches the bottom.
At 50 cm, the tool suits aquariums from 40 to 60 cm in height and aquaponics grow beds. It does not replace aquascaping scissors for fine, even trimming: it is the tool you keep beside the tank for the small everyday tasks. It also avoids introducing into the water what your hand carries, such as cream, soap or perfume, and it saves you the small cuts from the rocks and branches of the decor.
An ammonium test to measure the effect of leftovers
Decomposing leftover food releases ammonium. The NH4 ammonium drop test shows you whether your removal of uneaten food and your feeding ration are enough to keep it low, especially in a heavily stocked tank. You can adjust the amount you feed before the level becomes dangerous for your fish.
🧹 Day-to-day maintenance
Take a planted 120-litre aquarium: a 2-minute round with the tongs, every evening after feeding, picks up the leftovers the fish have ignored. Once a week, the scissors remove damaged leaves from slow-growing plants, such as anubias or cryptocorynes. To cut, bring the blades as close as possible to the base of the leaf, then squeeze firmly: a clean cut heals better than a torn leaf. For light debris, close the tongs slowly, without stirring the water, otherwise it drifts towards the filter. In a shrimp tank, the tongs remove a moult without disturbing the other animals. Rinse the tool in clean water after each use and let it dry before putting it away.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, the tongs are used first of all in the fish tank: you pick up leftover food and debris before they end up in the filter or in the grow beds, which limits the organic load. In the grow beds, the scissors remove damaged leaves without you having to put your hand in the water. The guide to understanding and correcting cloudy water in aquaponics explains why these small tasks matter, and the article on common aquaponics mistakes returns to the problem of overfeeding.
