Reagent refill for nitrate NO3 test
These two bottles — one powder and one drops — are the reagents for the nitrate test kit, providing approximately 40 measurements. Readings cover a range of 0.5 to 200 mg/L.
In aquaponics, this parameter plays two roles: it's a waste product to keep in check, and the form of nitrogen your plants feed on. The glassware, sampling syringe, measuring spoon, comparator block and colour chart from your kit remain in use.
The summary
- What it measures: nitrate, the final stage of the nitrogen cycle.
- What the box contains: 2 bottles, one powdered reagent and one in drops.
- Number of tests: approximately 40, matching the count of the original kit.
- What you're aiming for: no more than 30 mg/L in freshwater, 5 mg/L in a pond.
- How often: once a week, and immediately whenever green algae appear.
- Refill or complete kit: the refill is sufficient if you have kept the double measure and colour chart from the original kit.
The two reagents for the nitrate test, approximately 40 measurements, from 0.5 to 200 mg/L
Nitrate is the final form in the nitrogen cycle, the form that bacteria produce from nitrite and that your plants take up. These two bottles, one powder reagent and one drop reagent, are the reagents alone for the drop-based nitrate test, providing approximately 40 measurements in freshwater, saltwater and pond water.
🧂 Powder, drops and ten millilitres
Fill two test tubes with 10 ml of water, then add to one of them a large measure of powder, taken with the wide end of the dual-ended scoop, along with 6 drops of the second reagent. Stopper the test tube and shake it vigorously, then leave it to stand for 10 minutes until the colour has fully developed. The reading is then taken in the comparator block, with the untreated test tube compensating for the natural tint of your water.
Shake vigorously, then allow the grey residue to settle
Shake the closed test tube until only a few traces of grey powder remain at the bottom. These residues are normal and do not affect the reading, whereas insufficient shaking leaves a paler colour and an underestimated value. Keep exactly 10 ml in each test tube, as the reagent dose is calibrated for this volume.
Both reagents are classified Danger, with hazard statements H314, H318, and H317, and the second also carries H341, which flags a suspicion of genetic defects. Statements H411 and H412 relate to toxicity to aquatic organisms. Wear gloves, dispose of treated test tube contents down the sink and never into your tank, and drop empty bottles at your local recycling centre with household chemicals.
🥬 A nutrient for your crops
A steadily rising nitrate level, while ammonium and nitrite remain undetectable, indicates a functioning biological filter and a nitrogen output greater than what the plants are consuming. The general guideline is not to exceed 30 mg/L in freshwater, 20 mg/L in seawater and 5 mg/L in a garden pond. In aquaponics, you are not aiming for zero, since that nitrate is the fertiliser for your crops, and the nitrogen cycle guide places this stage in context alongside the others.
Combining phosphate replenishment to combat algae
Add the phosphate test refill to the same order if green algae are appearing. A high nitrate level only encourages their growth if the water also contains phosphate, and reading both values on the same day will help you decide on the right correction. If you do not yet have this kit, the complete phosphate test includes the glassware and colour chart.
📅 Measurement frequency and replenishment
With a new tank, fresh or marine, one measurement per week is sufficient, with an additional reading whenever green algae appear. At this frequency, the 40 measurements cover approximately 9 months of monitoring. Store the stoppered bottles in a dry place at room temperature, in their original packaging. If your water exceeds the last field on the colour chart, dilute 5 ml of the sample in 5 ml of distilled water and multiply the result by 2.

Two reagents, or the nitrate kit?
The same powder, the same drops and the same number of tests are found in both. It is the dosing and reading equipment that makes the difference.
