NFT growing channels 100 × 80 mm, 1.85 m long
This NFT channel with a 100 by 80 mm PVC profile comes with its end caps glued on at the factory, for joining a line end to end or for finishing it, and takes baskets 5 cm in diameter by 7 cm high. To fit your own end pieces, the channel without end caps can be completed with a solid cap or a drain cap drilled to 32 mm.
The summary
- What it is: a double-wall PVC growing channel in which a thin film of nutrient solution flows continuously.
- What sets it apart: 80 mm of internal height under the lid, compared with 50 mm on the standard profile.
- Its planting positions: 9 per channel, spaced 200 mm apart, over a length of 1.85 m.
- Which plants: those with thickening root systems that stay in place for several months.
Double-wall channel, 1.85 m, 100 x 80 mm profile, 9 planting slots
The 100 × 80 mm NFT growing channel, 1.85 m long, is a double-wall PVC channel in which a thin film of nutrient solution flows. It offers 80 mm of height under the lid, compared with 50 on the standard profile, which suits plants whose root mass thickens over several months. Its 9 planting positions are spaced 200 mm apart.
This channel offers 80 mm of clearance under the lid, which is 30 mm more than the 100 × 50 mm profile. A strawberry or basil root system grown over the season eventually fills every bit of space available, and when it does, it restricts the flow of the film: this 100 × 80 mm profile gives it the headroom that a shallower channel simply cannot provide.
It is also built with a double wall, two layers of food-grade PVC separated by an air gap. The channel then behaves like an insulating wall rather than a simple tube: the solution flowing through it follows the day's temperature swings with a delay, and the profile sags less between two supports once loaded with mature plants. The module measures 1.85 m and arrives with its end caps already glued at the factory.
🧊 What the air gap buffers
The greenhouse afternoon
The solution heats up more slowly behind the hollow-cell profile.
Cold nights
It also cools down more slowly, which evens out the daily temperature swing.
The loaded span
The double thickness stiffens the profile over 1.85 m of mature plants.
Sustained cold
The air gap adds no heat: a cold room stays cold.
A single channel is no substitute for a heater
The double wall smooths out temperature swings, but it does not remove any of them. In a room that stays cold for long periods, the solution ends up reaching the ambient temperature, just later. If your problem is a persistent cold rather than the gap between 14 h and 5 h in the morning, what you need is a heater for the solution.
Extending the line in two ways
This module with glued end caps is extended through its drainage outlets: choose the configuration with drainage at both ends, and join the modules together with 32 mm fittings. If you would rather have a continuous run, with no step between two channels, the version supplied without end caps is joined end to end with a 100 x 80 mm straight coupling, which slots together and is sealed with PVC solvent cement or silicone. In both cases, count your ends before ordering, since a glued end cap cannot be replaced.
🌱 9 positions at 200 mm
The removable lid has 9 slots, spaced 200 mm apart centre to centre, for baskets 5 cm in diameter and 7 cm high. This spacing suits large plants, and it matches the twenty or so centimetres needed between two leafy vegetables grown to full size: a heading lettuce, a strawberry plant or a bushy basil can open out without touching its neighbour. Salad leaves, herbs and strawberries are the crops for which you would choose this layout.
The lid lifts off by hand so that you can brush the inside between cycles, then goes back on without tools. Get into the habit of removing it as soon as the last plant is harvested rather than when the next batch is waiting: a channel is much easier to clean when empty and dry, and it is also a chance to look at the bottom, where a white deposit or a slippery biofilm indicates that a firmer scrub is needed.
📐 Slope, supports and length
The usual guideline for nutrient film is a slope of about 1 cm per metre, which means nearly 2 cm of drop between the two ends of a 1.85 m module, for a flow rate of around 1 to 2 litres per minute per channel. The double wall stiffens the profile; the check stays the same, whether the channel is loaded or empty: the water must come out at the end without forming a puddle. A line of several connected modules should stay under about twelve metres, beyond which the plants at the end receive a depleted solution.
If your water comes from a fish pond, pass it through mechanical filtration first, without which suspended solids will settle at the bottom of the channel. The 80 mm height leaves more margin than a low profile before this deposit interferes with the film, which lengthens the interval between two cleanings without replacing the filter. In this aquaponic circuit, the pH is set first for the fish and the nitrifying bacteria, around neutral.
📦 What the parcel contains
You receive the 1.85 m channel, its lid with 9 openings and its end caps already glued in the configuration you have chosen, singly or in packs of 8 or 16. Each channel also comes with its 9 baskets, 5 cm in diameter and 7 cm high. This is the channel used in the range's 36-site nutrient film system, with the same 32 mm return.
