Floating astaxanthin pellets to bring out the colours of your koi in summer
Excellent Color koi food with astaxanthin is a 90% floating pellet intended for koi carp when the water is above 16 °C. Its formula contains 39.5% protein and astaxanthin declared at 15 mg per kg, which revives reds and oranges after 8 weeks of continuous feeding. It comes in three pellet sizes, from 2 to 7 mm.
These floating pellets are the food for the warm season. You feed them from 16 °C, when your koi's metabolism is at its peak and digestion keeps pace. They come in three sizes: small at 2 to 3 mm from 7 cm, medium at 4 to 5 mm from 15 cm and large at 6 to 7 mm from 25 cm. They are 90% floating, so the fish come to the surface to take them: you can see who is eating and who is hanging back, and you stop feeding before the surplus sinks to the bottom.
🎨 What astaxanthin does
The label declares astaxanthin at 15 mg per kg, under additive code 2a161j. This carotenoid is deposited in the skin and revives the reds and oranges of your koi. Allow 8 weeks of continuous feeding before judging any change, because pigmentation builds up gradually. The pigment intensifies the red and orange areas the fish already has, without altering the pattern of its markings. A probiotic is also included, Bacillus subtilis at 10 billion CFU per kg, declared as a zootechnical additive.
🌞 Above 16 °C
The feeding window opens at 16 °C and closes as the water cools. Measure it in the water, in the morning, not in the air. Between 12 and 16 °C, the floating maintenance feed takes over, then below 12 °C it is the cold-water feed, 1 to 3 times a week, and below 8 °C you stop feeding altogether. In hot weather, give 2 to 4 small meals a day rather than a single one, since the carp, which has no stomach, digests small, repeated amounts better.
Spring restart and an opened bag
Do not overfeed your koi when spring feeding resumes, because a pond that turns green and a filter that clogs often start there, as the article on green pond water explains. Do not keep an opened bag from one season to the next, because fish oil oxidises with light and heat. And never feed this food to ruminants or to any other animal species, as the label reminds you, because it contains fishmeal.
A floating thermometer for changing bags
The thresholds in this calendar are measured to the nearest degree, whereas the air temperature differs from the water temperature by several degrees in both spring and autumn. A floating thermometer read every morning tells you which of the three bags to open, and when to change formula. The maintenance and fresh-water formulas can be found alongside this one in the pond fish feed collection.
Excellent Color differs from a growth food in its purpose. A growth formula aims at weight gain in young fish and is judged within a few weeks on the scales, whereas this one aims at the colour and immunity of a fish that is already fully formed and is judged over a season. It is also recommended during the breeding season, after a treatment or an illness, and in the weeks leading up to a show, times when the general condition and appearance of your koi matter more than their growth.
🌿 In ponds and in aquaponics
With 39.5% protein, this pellet is richer than the maintenance food at 33.5% and the cool-water food at 32%. Every extra point of protein ends up as nitrogen in your water, and its 1.3% total phosphorus also feeds the algae in a very sunny pond. A pellet that is not eaten sinks, breaks down on the bottom and adds to the load your filtration has to handle. That is why you should remove uneaten food with a net, and monitor your water with an ammonium test during the weeks following a change of bag, as described in the article on the nitrogen cycle.
📦 Opening and storage
For 10 kg of fish fed at 2% of their body weight per day, a 2 kg bag represents about 10 days of feeding, a 5 kg bag about 25 days and a 9.5 kg bag nearly 7 weeks, while the 0.5 kg pack lets you try out the formula. Carotenoids and fish oils are the two most fragile components of the formula, and both deteriorate with light and heat, precisely the conditions of a pond shelter in summer. So reseal the bag after each use, keep it in a cool, dry place, and scoop the feed out with a cup rather than by hand. A pigmented feed left open for a long time still feeds your fish, but its oxidised astaxanthin has less effect on colour.

Estimate the daily ration for your koi
Enter the total biomass of your fish, that is, the sum of their weights. The calculation uses a ration of 2% of biomass per day, the commonly published guideline for water between 21 and 23 °C, the temperature at which Excellent Color comes into its own. Then adjust according to your thermometer.
Total daily ration, to be split into several small meals, for water at 21 to 23 °C.
These feeding guidelines are those commonly published for koi carp. Below 16 °C, Excellent Color is no longer the suitable food. The overriding rule remains to give only what is eaten in under 5 minutes.
