180° diffuser and cap for aeroponic manifold
The 180° diffuser sprays the nutrient solution as fine droplets onto the roots in an aeroponic pot, and the plug closes off the end of a dip-tube fitting. Both parts connect in 6 mm and are sold in packs of 10 or 25.
The summary
6 mm parts that either mist the solution or close off the line of an aeroponic system
In an aeroponic pot, the roots hang in the reservoir with no grow medium at all, and they are fed by a fine mist sprayed continuously. The 180° diffuser is the part that produces this mist: fitted at the end of the manifold, it receives the solution pushed by the pump and sprays it in fine droplets over a half circle. Replace it when it breaks or clogs, and keep a few spares so that your roots are never left without water.
🌫️ 180° spraying
The diffuser is 23 mm long and 6 mm in diameter, and it fits by its 6 mm male inlet onto the end of the spray bar. Its slotted head releases the solution in a sheet fanned out at 180°, so a single diffuser sprays half of the reservoir. In the 5-plant aeroponic pot, two 26 cm spray bars thus place two diffusers face to face, and their sheets meet beneath the baskets. After each reassembly, open the lid with the pump running and check that the mist wets all the roots, with no dry patch on one side.
The 180° diffuser
It is red, made of polypropylene, 23 mm long, with a 6 mm male inlet.
The stopper
It is black, made of polypropylene, 19 mm long, with the same 6 mm male inlet.
The material
The polypropylene of both parts stays inert in contact with the nutrient solution.
The batches
Each lot contains 10 or 25 pieces, to replace a manifold or keep a spare.
Two diffusers per aeroponic pot
A 5-plant aeroponic pot runs on two diffusers, one at the end of each rail. The pack of 10 therefore covers five complete replacements, which lets you swap a blocked diffuser straight away instead of shutting down the pump while you wait for a delivery. If your rails start from an 8 mm Y fitting, check its condition at the same time, as it is what splits the flow between the two diffusers.
Roots always under the rain
In aeroponics, the roots have no reserve of water around them: a blocked diffuser or a stopped pump lets them dry out within a few hours. Check the spray pattern of each diffuser every time you open the lid, and replace straight away any that only produces a thin trickle. For this reason, keep a spare diffuser close at hand, next to the reservoir.
🔩 The 6 mm plug
The plug closes off the end of a dip-tube fitting, that is, a 6 mm female fitting left open on an irrigation line. It pushes in by hand via its male inlet and stops the solution escaping at that point, which lets you modify a line without changing the pipe. As it has the same 6 mm inlet as the diffuser, it can block off a position you no longer use, and the pressure is then redirected to the remaining outlets. First check the diameter of the fitting to be closed, because the plug only holds in a 6 mm opening.
🧽 Maintenance and replacement
The mineral salts in the solution eventually build up in the slot of the diffuser, and the sheet of water then narrows into a jet that waters only part of the roots. Take the diffuser apart at every solution change, rinse it in clean water, then leave it to soak in vinegar water if white deposits persist. A diffuser that is cracked, or whose slot stays blocked after this soak, should be replaced. The guide to maintaining a hydroponic system describes the other checks to carry out at the same time.
