Cucumbers, squash and courgettes share the same family and the same sowing method, yet their harvests could not be more different. The collections feature heritage varieties such as the Blanc de Paris gherkin, the Concombre Long Lungo Verde degli Ortolani, the Courge de Chioggia and the Doubeurre squash.

🥒 Three species, three growing schedules

Your cucumber is eaten immature and picked every 2 days for 2 months, making it the most demanding of the three in terms of regular attention. Courgette is also harvested young, at around 20 cm, and a single plant is more than enough for a family since it produces continuously from July through to the first cold snaps. Squash follows the opposite logic: it stays in the ground until fully ripe, is cut in October with a length of stalk attached, and then keeps for several months in a cool room. You will therefore not manage these three crops at the same pace, even though they are sown in the same week.

🍈 The kiwano and the cucamelon

The box of 12 cucumbers holds two surprises that are not ordinary cucumbers at all. The kiwano, or African horned cucumber, has a spiky orange skin and a gelatinous green flesh with a tart melon flavour; it's grown like a climbing cucumber and harvested once the skin turns yellow. The cucamelon, a tiny striped fruit roughly the size of a grape, is eaten whole and has a distinct lemony aftertaste. Both will intrigue your dinner guests and require exactly the same care as their neighbours, namely a support structure and soil that never dries out completely.

Long Italian cucumber, low bitterness, good in salads and easy to train up twine.

Marina di Chioggia

Blue-green, knobbly squash with dense, sweet flesh that keeps through to spring.

The classic butternut, with orange flesh and a solid neck, the simplest to cook with.

The seed is placed on its side, never flat

Two steps determine germination with these large seeds. Place them on their edge, point facing down, under 2 cm of soil: laid flat, water pools on the broad face and the seed rots before it can germinate. And wait for soil at 15 °C, late April in most regions, because sowing 3 weeks early into cold ground won't produce earlier germination; it won't germinate at all.

Sow in a peat pot, not in a tray

Cucurbits are sensitive to root disturbance at transplanting, and a set-back plant can take 2 weeks to recover. Biodegradable pots are planted whole, rootball and all, without touching the roots. This lets you start 3 weeks ahead of direct-sow dates and harvest that much earlier.

📏 Floor space first

This is the factor that is always underestimated at sowing time. A trailing courgette will spread across 4 m² in 6 weeks and latch onto everything it encounters, including neighbouring rows. A non-trailing courgette fits within one square metre, provided it is given good air circulation around the collar. The cucumber, on the other hand, is trained vertically up a string or net and then takes up only 30 cm of row, making it the only one of the three that is truly suited to a small garden or a growing system. Plan this out before sowing, not after germination.

🌱 Station sowing

The traditional method remains the safest. Place 3 seeds at the same spot, 2 cm deep, then remove the two weakest plants once the first true leaves have appeared. This compensates for the uneven germination rate of these large seeds without multiplying the rows. Allow 5–8 days for germination in a grow medium at 20 °C. Space stations 1 metre apart for courgettes and 2 metres for trailing squashes. The growing calendar gives the windows region by region.

🫙 Seeds that last

These species are among the most stable in the kitchen garden for seed storage. Kept somewhere dry, cool and dark, cucumber and squash seeds retain good germination rates for 5 to 6 years, sometimes longer for squash. A set of 12 varieties therefore covers three or four seasons without loss. Beyond that point, test 10 seeds between two sheets of damp paper before committing an entire bed to a single variety.
