EHEIM Clear UVC pond UV steriliser, 7 to 60 W
This UV-C clarifier is fitted in line on a pond circuit, against green water and suspended algae. Its seven power ratings treat 7,000 to 60,000 litres without fish, a volume that is halved with fish and quartered with koi.
The summary
- What you receive: the unit with its lamp and quartz tube, its nozzles and instructions.
- The figure that decides: the volume treated is divided by four as soon as there are koi.
- How to choose: seven power ratings, from 7,000 to 60,000 litres without fish.
- What effort each year: one lamp to replace per season, and the quartz tube to wipe clean.
- What fittings: half-inch to one inch up to 18 W, one inch to one and a half inch above that.
- Warranty and power supply: 3-year manufacturer's warranty, 5 m cable across the whole range.
A UV-C clarifier chosen according to the pond's stocking as much as its volume
When a pond turns green in spring, the algae that cloud the water are single-celled and pass straight through the filter foams. This clarifier is installed in line on the circuit, after the pump, before or after the filter, and treats the water passing through it with UV-C radiation. Seven power ratings cover 7 to 60 W, and you choose yours according to the stocking as much as the volume. The guide to green pond water places this treatment among the other options.
🟢 The volume depends on your fish
The volume that a given unit can treat depends on what lives in the pond. With no fish at all, the 7 W treats 7,000 litres and the 60 W treats 60,000; with fish, these volumes are halved, and with koi they are divided by four, giving 1,800 and 15,000 litres. A 10,000-litre pond stocked with koi therefore needs the 60 W model, whereas the 9 W is enough for the same volume without fish. Koi stir up the bottom, eat a lot and load the water with organic matter, which feeds the algae that the unit has to destroy.
That leaves the actual consumption, which exceeds the lamp's power rating on most models because of the ballast that drives the tube. The 7 W uses 9 W at the meter, the 11 W uses 14 and the 24 W uses 26, while the 18 W and the 60 W show the same figure for the lamp and for the unit. Over a season of 6 months of continuous running, the 7 W therefore needs about 39 kWh and the 60 W about 263 kWh. The cable is 5 m long across the whole range, so the unit must be placed within 5 m of an outdoor socket.
🔁 When to replace your lamp
A UV-C lamp wears out without going out. It keeps emitting visible light long after it has stopped being germicidal, and nothing on the unit will tell you when that happens. Replacement should therefore be done on a schedule, at the start of the season, on a lifespan of around 8,000 hours. While you have it dismantled, wipe the quartz tube, on which limescale deposits a film that blocks the radiation before it reaches the water.
UV-C radiation and inlet pressure
UV-C radiation is dangerous to the eyes and skin. Always unplug the unit before opening it, and never look at the lamp while it is lit. On the 7 to 18 W models, the water pressure at the clarifier inlet must not exceed 0.4 bar.
Keep a spare lamp for the spring
The EHEIM replacement UV-C lamp is available in all seven wattages of the range. Order it before the season restarts, so you can replace the worn tube on the day you set the circuit running again, rather than waiting for the water to turn green. The clarifier then restarts with its full germicidal power from the first warm days, when single-celled algae multiply fastest.
🌱 The clarifier in aquaponics
In a pond connected to crops, the UV light only acts on the water that passes through the unit. The nitrifying bacteria, which live on the filter media and on the walls, never enter the treatment chamber, so the conversion of ammonium to nitrate carries on while the water clears. However, ultraviolet light breaks down the chelated iron that you supply to the plants: switch the clarifier off for the 6 to 12 hours after each dose, long enough for the roots to take up the iron. With koi, choose the unit using the volume given for a koi pond, the lowest of the three, and the guide on koi carp in aquaponics explains why this fish loads the water so heavily.
📦 Fittings and carton contents
The box contains the clarifier assembled with its lamp and quartz tube in place, its connection ends and its instructions. The ends cover half an inch to one inch on the 7 to 18 W models, and one inch to one and a half inches on the 24, 36 and 60 W ones. Measure the diameter of your circuit before ordering: it is the only dimension that decides whether the unit can be installed at your home without an adapter. The 7 to 18 W models are rated IPX4.
